I didn't find any software to remind dates such as birthdays, meetings,... simple and integrated in a GTK or QT desktop.

Someone filled an entry in the "make it with MONO" project but it's seems that it wont win :(

I made a shell script for this purpose using "calendar" executable and "zenity" to make the windows. I can post it here if someone wants it.

I think it should be intergrated with the date/time applet in gnome, which is usually in the top-right corner.

i know evolution has calendar functionality. I use that and it seems to work just fine for me with schedule, b-days etc.

I'm reffering on a light app placed in the task-bar. Evolution is discarted for that reason. I can't talk about Sunbird as I haven't tested it yet (I didn't find any repository and had problems compiling it)

I agree with lolocaust, but a stand alone app would be nice too.

sunbird (IMHO) is not that good, and the lightninig ext for thunderbird is a bit unstable too.
evolution isn't good either.

my alternative, Thunderbird with Google Calendar.
i'm a little jealous of my friends outlook, but i won't use windows just for that.

there is something called "dates" in the repos, that is a small frontend to evo-data-server. not sure how usable it is though

Not quite sure what is wrong with the calendar already integrated very very well in the ubuntu desktop!

Just click on the date time and *bam* there is a calendar.
Double click on a date to open evolution and add it to your calendar.

I have to test it more, but I think "dates" doesn't fit my needs...
I want the app to hide in the tray and just advice me when an event occurs.

I think "gremid" can become a good alternative because it's very simple, light, and the use of libnotify for the reminders is elegant.

My problem with evolution is that it's mainly a mail program but with a calendar plugin. I just want a light reminder app, I already use thunderbird as my mail application.

Use Google Calendar, then you can get reminders as SMS or mail.
If you use Sunbird or the plugin with your Thunderbird you can even have the reminders in your mail program.
