Blender screen switches back to desktop screen

When I am running Blender 2.43 and I go to the menu bar the screen switches back to my desktop, this makes its impossible to select anything from the Blender menu. I think this could be something to do with using Beryl? If I turn Beryl off I can not drag my windows around the screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Hope someone can help me.

try turning "focus stealing prevention" to "none" in the general options of beryl settings
