Hi all
I've just discovered a WONDERFUL distro!
Its ARK LINUX!
Its lovely features-
1. Comes in 5 ISOs! (thats much more than Ubuntu)
Ark Linux 2005.1 CD (only this CD will do)
Ark Linux Extra Sofware CD
Ark Linux Development Suite CD
Ark Linux Server Software CD
Ark Linux Extra Languages CD
WOW!!!
2. FULLY open source & FREE
3. Unlimited support; allows dist-upgrading
4. Has a beautiful bootscreen & shutdown screen
5. Looks IRRESISTIBLY SEXY & SLICK!
just see its screenshots at osdir
6. KDE-based by default
7. Wine pre-installed
8. Has this water theme I really like
9. Has the latest packages
The best thing I like about it is its default LOOK & FEEL!
Looks SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!
On the other hand, I find the default Gnome-based
look of Ubuntu a bit ugly.
No offence intended. I'm just a newbie giving
my personal feedback after using both Ark
& Ubuntu.
ONE THING IS FOR SURE: ARK LINUX LOOKS WAY COOOOOOOOOOLER
& SEXIER THAN UBUNTU!!
From their homepage: "Ark Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use, primarily for people without prior Linux experience.
Ark Linux is designed to:
be easy to learn and use
include many tools and applications
Ark Linux is fully Open Source and Free Software, meaning, basically, you can freely redistribute it in both modified and unmodified form."
The best thing I like about Ark is that it comes with so many CDs and contains lots of stuff, which is really nice & convenient, especially for dial-up people like me.
AND ITS ALL TOTALLY FREE!!!
I hope it becomes the #1 distro.
Love

1. Post screenshots.
http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=290&slide=16&title=ark+linux+2005.1+kde+3.4+screenshots
2. Do not SCREAM.
3. The fact that it has 5 isos does not mean it is better or worst.
4. Ubuntu and every other debian distro on teh planet allows dist-upgrading.
5. You have given really vague reasons on why it is better. Simply put, to your opinion it looks better than Ubuntu. That does not mean it is better.
6. It is KDE based. You cannot compare it with Ubuntu.
7. Ubuntu is easy to learn and use.
8. Good thing you liked something Linux.
9. ... it's simply KDE, nothing else. This looks like any other KDE distro (Kubuntu) with the Plastik theme. Even Xandros kind of looks similar. http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=306&slide=31

Sounds like you just really liked the look of KDE vs. Gnome. Maybe you should try a comparison of Kubuntu to Ark.
Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/)
Enjoy!

The installer is pretty horrid.
If he likes KDE with that plastik like feel, I'd suggest MEPIS and Kubuntu.

and on that happy note, I looked at their web page, and the system appears to be based upon Red Hat and uses apt for rpms... Also, the complaints from pages indicates little NVIDIA support, a lack of packages available on their rpms. I was interested when I read this post, but that has quickly died. I'm happy with gnome and Ubuntu.

Although all the points you're making are fairly valid(but are a matter of personal preference) try to calm down a bit and not 'scream' about it.
I'd like to try a few other distros before I completely stick with Ubuntu(I've already tried FreeBSD, Mandriva, Fedora, Arch, MEPIS and a few others) but I can't stand KDE. KDE looks terrible. It's cluttered, bloated and way too bright. More distros should start off with XFCE. When I install a distro, the first thing I do is install XFCE and if you haven't heard of it, google it. A combination of XFCE and Gdesklets is potential for a very cool desktop. :-)

I guess you can make almost any linux ditribution look exactly how you want, it's whats under that counts.
Ubuntu is great for it's purpose, 1cd, lots of hardware support, easy installer, Great forum with lots of helpfull gurus.
As a workstation it better be damn good to compete with this

I agree to your opinion. XFCE is really nice, cool, simple and SEXY. GDesklets is like an Ornament on top of it.
Well, one thing I can share based on my experience of using various distributions (Redhat, Fedora, Mandrake, SuSe, Crux, .....); On a macro level, a debian based distro fares better than no-debian based. Now, among debian distro's Ubuntu made my soul stay in peace. Its packages base, the support and ease of use is simply great. So it fares well as a specialized Debian distro.

Well, I just tried kubuntu, next to my ubuntu. Indeed it's definitly more cluttered and more windows - like than gnome. Removed it, it's gnome that I chose for I guess....all personal taste.
But... being a relative n00b, I think it's better to learn working with only one particular desktop.

It is just KDE. And pretty default at that.
And 5 CD's isn't a plus to me. I'd rather apt-get each application i want that download 700 megs of crap i don't.
You should try Kubuntu.
Well, I just tried kubuntu, next to my ubuntu. Indeed it's definitly more cluttered and more windows - like than gnome. Removed it, it's gnome that I chose for I guess....all personal taste. Perhaps, maybe, just a little, by default. But KDE definitely does minimal better than Gnome. It's almost fluxboxesque if you want.
Personally, the way I differentiate between Gnome and KDE, is that Gnome is much more standardised. It's the middle ground, it's a clean and fairly compact interface. But with this there's less control over variation. There's a clear set of rules, to me at least, that you have to follow to have a gnome interface that won't compromise usablity.
In KDE, things aren't nearly as neat from the start. It's up to the user to put in some work, find out how KDE works to adjust to a different way of doing things and devise an interface that works best for them. KDE, in my opinion covers the extremes. It can be all the bells, whistles and fake breasts. But it can also be stripped right down, whilst retaining the feel of a Desktop Environment rather than that of a window manager.
But the right tools for the right user. Use what you're comfortable with.

Puppy was cool. I used it for awhile, until it began killing computers. My ethernet stopped working, even for live cd's, on any router, with any cord. My father's computer's cd drive crashes the OS you are using if it tries to load anything. And my friend's computer stopped booting altogether. No lights, no sound, nothing. Completely dead. All of this happened directly after a puppy boot.
And no. TTY is lighter. Try beating 5MB.

I wasn't that excited about it actually. I don't like KDE much. There was no xterm. The konsole did not save my preferences. I could not login with the users I created. In fact, I could not use KDM at all. The only app that I installed with gslapt that actually worked was Firefox. All others failed. Personally I don't really care about "sexiness" in a distro. I can change themes, and WM's. But I'm glad you like it.
