Sorry man but honestly it wouldn't make much difference for you. ATI cards have poor support on Linux. So it isn't going to do you that much good. Best bet is to at least buy a Geforce FX 5200

Actually, the question is relative to another linux distribution's performance...

I an not very knowledgable about this, but is it because Ubuntu uses the free ati drivers in X.org which provide acceleration, but not as much performance as the non-free (proprietairy) flglx drivers?

Nope, the free drivers do not support 3d on the 9600, so he can't be using those.

I don't get very good frame rates in glxgears myself. While staring at the numbers, I sometimes like to move the terminal on top of the spinning gears, and watch my scores climb. Right about then, I put my wallet back in my pocket and set the CircuitCity.com ad back down. It's the best sol'n I've found to this problem yet.

Damn! Is it really that bad?? In Windows at least, the 9600, while certainly not top of the line or modern gets the job done well for most games, while the FX5200 is considered utter crap and not suitable for games. (it's designed as a mainstream/non-gamer card.) Do they really compare in Linux?

I don't believe it's GPL'd, but free nonetheless. Try here: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/wolfensteinet/downloads/

Ah, that's no problem. It's the real deal, the full installer with the latest update! You might do a search around the net, since I think there's a bittorrent for that same file - one of the major download sites has it. It's a 260 MB whopper, so you might want to go wash/wax your car or learn a new language while you wait for the dl on a dialup.

/edit Try out this torrent if you prefer: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com:6969/torrents/243223ae5a39909db07a338980f00dd868251f05.torrent

awh, no problem. I'm just glad to help out a fellow ET'er. Just do me one favor and we call it even, ok? In case you ever see me in a server, from time to time I like to whip out the trusty 'ole flame thrower and barb-q my teammates as they spawn - just to keep things interesting. Jus hit F2 when the kick votes comes my way, ok? thx.
