I have attempted to install several flavors of Ubuntu on my PPC G3 333 iMac 256mb. It seems that it does not matter what version I burn the disk will boot and begain the installation process but lock up. I have tried Ubuntu regular and alternate, Kubuntu alternate, and xubuntu alternet.

When I run check-powerpc it always comes up with there is an error on the book. I have burned multiple copies on several different media with same results. I am using my MacBook's cd-burner with disk utility to burn. I have asked diskutil to very image and all come back with an error is that right?

Read something in the forum about burning the disk at a lower speed but so far that has not helped either.

I don't know if you have the same problem as I had, but I have found that if I burn a CD of an ISO with Disk Utitliy in Mac OS X, it won't boot. If I burn the Ubuntu ISO within the Linux OS at about 4X, it will boot. You can get the installation CDs by mail, but it takes a few weeks. I did that originally to get started with Ubuntu.

If you've followed the Burning ISO HowTo (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto) you shouldn't be getting the problems you are getting unless you've got media or hardware problems. Some on the forum have had more success using a CD-RW when CD-Rs have failed.

PPC G3 333 iMac 256mb.

*Puts on best Jamie Hyneman voice* Well there's your problem!

The first generation iMacs like yours have naff CD-ROM drives, and often don't read CD-Rs correctly. You're lucky to have it read enough to boot!

Try a CD-RW. I know it sounds crazy, but when I'm testing my Copland builds on the iMac those discs work perfectly, and no other discs do.

It is possible to do an install without using the cd, but using the downloaded iso on your macosx partition, assuming you have enough space.

I outlined the procedure I used in a thread a while back, no comments so far.

It is easier than it looks.

Install/rescue with no cd drive - O/F booting

Grazie, thanks for the links. The ISO burning link looks great. It also shows the md5sum, but the instructions say to go to the download file/directory - with no indication what or where this file or directory is. The sad noob is stumped. He craves the loss of innocence/ignorance.

I have a feeling is the drive. I have placed an order for another one. We shall see.

Now that PPC is no longer officially supported a lot of the download link references in the wiki and other places will no longer apply. I really think we need a sticky for this so I'm not going to post the links here. It has been mentioned on other threads if you want to download a version of Ubuntu for PPC. If you still can't find it, PM me.
