The tux image has most likely been done with a vector illustration program, like Inkscape or Xara. Try installing both of them and playing around with them untill you decide which you prefer.

If you want to do proper 3D designs you could look at blender, it has an option to do a cartoon style render.

It can also be done with gimp, although you are probably better off using xara or inkscape. I made this 'orb' from scratch in the gimp. The same techniques can be applied to your image to add the highlights and shadows.

There's a video tutorial for doing a cartoon penguin in Blender here (http://www.blendernation.com/2007/04/13/penguin-modeling-videotutorial/).

However the look of the penguin example you gave would be best achieved in a vector program. (Inkscape or Xara)

Try googling for tutorials on 'glossy buttons' or 'glossy icons'. The general techniques you find will be quite easy to copy in Inkscape or Xara, and just the thing for that 3D look.

Good luck. ;-)

Xara is I think 3ds max like program and not for the vector graphics. Does it work with ubuntu??

You are thinking of Blender which is similar to 3ds Max. Xara Xtreme is for Linux and it is for 2-D vector editing like Inkscape. Xara can be installed through the Ubuntu Software Centre.
