The next Ubuntu release has been named "Gutsy Gibbon (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2007-April/000276.html)"
What do you guys think?
Me? I like it.

They restarted the lettering release names after Dapper. That said, I hope Gutsy Gibbon+1 is called Hypnotic Ham with a three color throwback logo to Porky Pig.

Is this one supposed to be the next LTS release? Name sounds a bit odd for that, though I guess "Dapper Drake" is odd as well, and they don't officially use the name after the release.

Nope. The mailing list post says that it is NOT LTS.

Hi guys,
there is no an italian term for gutsy. Can someone give me an explanation?
As for me, there is too much consonance with feisty and in some way it's no soft as feisty fawn, it's "hard".
But... let the devs have a good job. :-)

They also plan to release another flavour .. similar to gNewSense I suppose?
The Glossy Gnu will nonetheless play a role in this next release,
because Ubuntu 7.10 will feature a new flavour - as yet unnamed - which
takes an ultra-orthodox view of licensing: no firmware, drivers,
imagery, sounds, applications, or other content which do not include
full source materials and come with full rights of modification,
remixing and redistribution. There should be no more conservative home,
for those who demand a super-strict interpretation of the "free" in free
software. This work will be done in collaboration with the folks behind
Gnewsense.
Gusty Gibbon though .. hum! Me no like.

Interesting read, aparently we are supposed to get a 100% free Ubuntu in Gibbon (so back to Automatix and the rest for any kind of useful multimedia?) At the same time they want compositing by default. Did the nouveau project do so well that it will be possible to have full 3D acceleration without the nvidia driver? By the same token what are we going to do with ATI cards, the newer ones don't even have 3D with FGRLX?

Yes you can update without a reinstall. Generally speaking it is a good idea to have your /home on a separate partition from the rest of the system so if you do have to reinstall for some reason you will retain all your files and settings.

Feisty Fawn had a nice ring to it but Gutsy Gibbon sounds kind of weird. At the same time this is just the development name we go by numbers for final versions anyway so it's not that big of a deal.

The day after the oficial release of Feisty Fawn (7.04)
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
find & replace feisty to gibbon
save
Then from a terminal run
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
You can use update-manager or synaptic, but I prefer, for the first time, use the terminal so I can see errors and correct them on the fly.

great! Thanks a lot. Seems very simple. Like i said im new to ubuntu and i was using a knoppix hd install and i didnt like it because i was new to linux then and i didnt know how to do anything so i decided to go with ubuntu because it seemed simple and im very glad i did. I then installed it on my friends computer and my sisters. They seem to like it too. but thanks again for the help!

WAIT!!!!!!!
First updates may crash your system, so if you use it for important work, wait at least for a month. In the meanwhile read the forum to check if there are dangerous problems.

Looking at the preliminary release schedule on the wiki they're called tribes.

I think they mean a separate version that's 100% free as a collaboration with the people behind gNewSense. The usual Ubuntu will still be available with codecs and proprietary wireless firmware etc.
JDee
April 12th, 2007, 09:50 AM
i will wait a month or so then. Im not that worried about my work on it yet. If it crashes it crashes. I use win xp too. But like i said i dont havbe to much into it yet just music and stuff. Wireless card setup and all that good junk. I have my music on the xp partition and i pull it from the xp partition so i can listen to it on ubuntu and save some space. but thanks for the tip on waiting, i did read before about crashes when updating and that it was something that they didnt get 100% down yet.

Read again. There will be NEW, yet unnamed Ubuntu flavor without any nonfree software. New, no changes in Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu policies.
Even without nonfree stuff multimedia is going to be good as long as you dont't download your content from p2p networks. Instead encode your own files with Flac, Theora and vorbis.
Anyway many people couldn't care a less about multimedia.

This is actually a pretty bad idea for upgrading to a final release (though it's the best option for upgrading to a very early development release). The reason is that apt-get dist-upgrade does not compensate for certain "policy" changes made to ubuntu during the release cycle. The upgrade-manager is way easier. Of course, it's a pretty bad idea to upgrade to alpha versions since you can probably expect some kind of breakage (ie you can't boot or the graphical interface won't start). Then again, for the more adventurous among us, that's part of the fun ;)
On topic: I like the gibbon. It's a monkey :) How can't you like them. They're so cute. Just look up on wikipedia. Lots of pictures :) This is by far my favorite name so far.
By the way: gutsy (adjective): "marked by courage and determination in the face of difficulties or danger; robust and uninhibited" according to Google. Hmm, "robust and uninhibited." :-D Me like.

Yes that has been mentioned on the previous page. That's not a bad idea. I would love to encode my own files however MPAA is for some reason against me doing that to their movies. BBC also doesn't seem to allow me on the TopGear set with a camcorder or at least have the decency to send me the original tapes along with the necessary equipment. I dunno they just don't want to be nice to me or something not sure.
Quite a few people care about multimedia, in fact just about any "regular" user will care about multimedia. At the very least YouTube is pretty much a must at this point. Of course Flash is never installed by default but then again what's the point of getting a 100% libre OS if you are going to install non-libre software on it anyway?

Erik Trybom
April 12th, 2007, 03:31 PM
I think the naming scheme is brilliant. It makes the versions more distinct from each other, it brings some attention to the distro, and it's fun. If you want to be serious you can just say you're running Ubuntu 7.04.
As for Gutsy Gibbon, well, it's better than Edgy Eft - although I'd much rather have a giraffe or a gazelle.
Quillz

Certainly not a name I was expecting. It's not a bad name, but I personally would have preferred something that incorporated "Gazelle," as it would imply speed or gracefulness.

There didn't used to be an order. It was Warty Warthog, then Hoary Hedgehog, then Breezy Badger, then dapper, edgy, feisty... I don't know why they decided to start going in order with D.

Anyone who checks into multiple Ubuntu forums, language-wise, please tell us what it's going to be named in, say, Spanish, French, Yoruba, Russian, etc. For that matter, what are Edgy, Dapper and Feisty named?
Make no mistake... all of the names are bizarre, awkward, and somewhat childish. And yes, as someone already pointed out, we only use the descriptive anyway, so "Gutsy" will be somewhat slightly less embarrassing to say in polite company than "Gutsy Gibbon". Personally, in this case, I think "Gibbon" might be the preferable shorthand, don't you think? Better yet, 7.10.
If the lettering continues as planned, I would like to recommend "Horny Human". In fact, I'll copyleft that right now and ask that it be submitted for consideration by Mr. Shuttlesworth, et al. ;-)

English is my second language, and I know what "sovereign", "inadequate" and "fallacious" is, but what "Gutsy" or "Gibbon" is beats me. (Of course I do my homework however: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibbon and http://images.google.com/images?q=gutsy explains it all)
