Does anyone have the sims 2 working? crossover says it doesn't work, does it work under vmware? I don't currently have a VM on my machine, no need but if The Sims 2 will run then I'll install it. Anyone have any ideas?

I want to know the same, the sims will run under win98 with the correct graphics card but I don't know if vmware has hardware acceleration that the sims needs.

worth a try?

I was gonna try this game out yesterday but got distracted. I'll give it a go and see if I can get it working and let you know.

Unless you're working with VMWare Workstation then it has no chance of working. VMWare workstation is the only VM that currently supports graphics hardware accelleration and in it's pre-alpha which means it's not expected to work at all.

I've had mixed success with this 3d lark in vmware

on my main pc with a geforce card, accell "works" I'm about to install the sims and see how far that gets me.

On my two ubuntu laptops, both capable of running beryl, vmware craps out with the 3-D rendering failed rubbish at startup!

I guess My only choice for the sims on the laptops is a dual boot. and with only a 30gig drive it's going to be tough :(

I wouldn't attempt it with a weak system

Yeah, I tried to get it installed but I couldn't even persuade the installer to start with wine. I think it's a no go for now lol

yeah I can't live without certain games, so I dual boot.

all vote for it in the appdb, its getting near the top, then it will be higher priority for the wine devs

No, it wont. That list is only there for the sake of it, no-one actually pays any attention to it.

yeah I can't live without certain games, so I dual boot. i cant live without half-life 1 & 2. you could try virtual box.

VirtualBox wont run 3D games.

I always hear people say, "what about vmware?". Honestly I did try it once, but didn't get very far. now that I know a bit more about it, I really can't imagine trying to run it on my system. Linux + vmware + winxp = brainfart.

If you do choose to try it (and have a decent system) I'd love to know how it goes. I do hear, however, that it is probably one of the better solutions to getting MS-windows based programs to work on linux.

EDIT: I just realized that there was a post about that already. I should really read before I post stuff

Sims2 deluxe edition runs under a vmware server WinXP install pretty much perfectly on an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop that has crappy SIS graphics.

I tried installing it in windows XP, then copying everything over from the sims install dir over to my ubuntu machine. it worked to an extent, then bobmbed out saying something about certain files needed were not installed correctly...

Tried under vmware and it crapped out immediately, saying directx 9c not supported!

vmware only supports dx in one of there products(i think its workstation?). And even that is only in beta and only supports dx 7 or 8

Yep its DX7 I think thats "properly" supported, and DX8 sometimes "just works".

Oh well.... :(
