Hey,
Does anyone else here use ruby on ubuntu? The default version of irb seems to be very old (0.9 - 2003) and doesnt seem to recognise ri
Anyone know where i can get a tarball of a newer version? i tried googling, but didnt find anything. I also tried searching sourceforge, but again - nothing. Also what is the correct way of upgrading? Do i uninstall the apt package before i install the new tarball or what?
paz y amor,

I program in Ruby. Didn't pay attention to the irb version as long as Ruby is current. IRB may be in the full ruby source install http://ruby-lang.org/en/20020102.html
Usually third-party binaries are broken up into seperate packages.

Okay, if i try installing from the source you pointed to, do i need to completely uninstall all the ruby stuff that i already have installed. oh, and yes, i am using the latest stable release of ruby (1.8) atm.
Do you not use ri? im only starting out, so it seems to me to be the single most important feature, and it is currently missing.

rofl, ah god im stupid. This was all a false alarm. From what i understood you were meant to run ri inside irb, but its actually a terminal command. By the way, i whole heartedly recomend why's poignant guide to ruby (http://poignantguide.net/ruby/index.html)
