I have used the instructions in the guide for installing skype, but i still don't see any qt widgets in either gnome or xfce. I don't have KDE installed. Why would this happen? Another appliction where I'm having the same issue is dvd::rip, but amaroK shows widgets fine. Any ideas?

See http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=35635
You have to install kcontrol (it's on Synaptic) and you have to set a style in kcontrol.
For Example if you want the default Plastik style to apply for Skype. You must change to another style, press apply, change back to Plastik and press apply, all this before starting Skype.
