Have you tried using the installer supplied by liflg (http://www.liflg.org/)

Should get it installed, Though if your using the stock hoary kernel (2.6.10) you may have problems with copy protection which you'll have to upgrade to 2.6.11 to get round.

cedega is also available free via cvs but can prove to be a challenge to get installed and is missing some bits & bobs.

You may not need to. I'm running 2.6.10 and (mostly) have Generals working. Try installing first before upgrading the kernel.
