Howto compile Pidgin IM

As you may know, Gaim has been renamed to Pidgin IM. Beta7 source is now available in testing. The only difference I see is the interface:

I don't guarantee that this won't break your system, so please be sure you make any necessary backups.

to install any dependencies you need to compile Pidgin, run the following:

sudo apt-get build-dep gaim

autogen also needs some files:
sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev

Go to the pidgin dev site to get the code:
http://developer.pidgin.im/
extract the source, cd into the folder, and execute
sh autogen.sh
I got some warnings at this step but nothing that prevented me from continuing.

after that is finished, run
make && sudo make install
When it's ready to install it will ask for your password to copy the files over.

I don't know... but since gaim and its libraries have changed names, I don't think there would be a problem with leaving the old gaim around.

You can. All you need to make a deb is the sources. You can just type checkinstall and it will make a deb for you.

Great how-to! It compiled, installed and runs fine.

It appears as though it's using ~/.gaim to store it's preferences and may step on your old gaim config, so it may be a good idea to back-up that dir before running in case you want to revert back to gaim without any issues:

I built a deb package with checkinstall:

You have to remove the package gaim first (sudo apt-get remove gaim) because I don't know how to define conflicts with checkinstall.
It was built on edgy, but seems to work on feisty too.

There are some files, which are used by both. For example usr/share/dbus-1/services/gaim.service .

So when the pidgin-package tries to write its files, dpkg bars it from doing that because some of these files already exist and are being used by the gaim-package.

I think when you "make install", it simply overwrites the files and gaim doesn't break because they are probably the same.

I ran Gaim 2 beta 3.1(??) after running Pidgin and lost my Yahoo account info. Just a suggestion to backup. Better safe than sorry.

you can either remove gaim, since pidgin replaces it:
sudo apt-get remove gaim

or if you want to keep gaim in order to keep the ubuntu-desktop meta-package, you can install pidgin with the --force-overwrite option:
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite <deb file>

I don't get this Monotone crap. First off, why do we have to download a 184 MB file first? Secondly, I can't even mtn pull properly for some reason. Gives the following message.

Obviously connecting to localhost won't do anything for it. I don't understand what could be the problem. I followed the instructions exactly. SVN was working perfectly fine in the first place. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

I don't get this Monotone crap. First off, why do we have to download a 184 MB file first?

Apparently, using monotone means every individual developer has the entire development history stored locally. When you commit, you don't commit to a centralized server (as you do with SVN) but to your local database. This means any calculation is done on your computer so I guess it reduces the strain on the server for huge projects. You have to retrieve the complete history because of how version control inherently works:

When a file is under version control, we also say that it is registered in the version control system. Each registered file has a corresponding master file which represents the file's present state plus its change history—enough to reconstruct the current version or any earlier version. Usually the master file also records a log entry for each version, describing in words what was changed in that version. (quoted from Concepts of Version Control (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/VC-Concepts.html))

With monotone developers could even act as servers themselves (see the monotone FAQ (http://www.venge.net/mtn-wiki/FAQ)), exchanging data underling and then eventually deciding to push their changes to the pidgin.im database. Or something like that...

In UsingPidginMonotone (http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/UsingPidginMonotone) it is stated that you can just do a mtn pull from your working directory. However, this only seems to work if you've set pidgin.im im.pidgin.* to your default directory/branch (instead of localhost). You can do this like:


$ mtn pull --set-default pidgin.im im.pidgin.*
mtn: setting default server to pidgin.im
mtn: setting default branch include pattern to 'im.pidgin.*'
mtn: setting default branch exclude pattern to ''

I still have to read the documentation thoroughly to understand what the wildcard exactly achieves but now you can just execute an mtn pull && mtn update from your working directory.

My experience with Instant Messaging is minimal.
However, I was persuaded by a young friend to set up an MSN account (she uses Windows).
So, I thought Pidgin would allow me to communicate with her from my (new) MSN account without having to switch out of Ubuntu.
I also saw this as an opportunity to impress her with the versatility of Ubuntu/Linux towards which previous attempts have not gone down too well (although the Beryl cube at least drew a few gasps of awe and wonder).
I got Pidgin installed without any problems and it works fine. But, it apparently doesn't allow voice communication through MSN.
Unfortunately, this has resulted in a very black mark against Linux in the eyes of my friend.

So, is that it...it just can't be done or has Pidgin got a trick up its sleeve?

It has been promised many times but never delivered. I believe aMSN offers a more complete MSN-replacement, and might accomplish this.

On the other hand... MSN voice chat is *terrible*.

Well, I am running make install as we speak and everything seems to be going as planned for the most part. I needed an additional dependency of libtool before I got going, but that was as easy as running apt-get install libtool.

Actually, aMSN 0.96 does not have voice chat.
However, I then came across this thread (http://http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2524202#post2524202) which supplies links for installing aMSN 0.97 which has voice support. Whether this means the full voice chat available in MSN or just voice clip stuff I don't know as yet as I'm having a little difficulty installing it.
Strangely, the aMSN homepage doesn't mention aMSN 0.97.

i compiled it myself less than a hour ago and they updated some of the artwork, but installation is EXACTLY the same (though you can now use a tar.bz2 or a .rpm if you're in the mood to use alien), remember to make uninstall the old one :)

I used synaptic and removed gaim-data and it gave me a warning too (Also one about nautlius-sendto) but I went ahead with it and nothing bad happened and I than installed Pidgin and it's all okay. D:

Removing "ubuntu-desktop" does not uninstall ubuntu, or remove system files. Go ahead and remove gaim.

same here =). i opened gaim by accident just now lol and that still works too.

just a tip for when you're compiling: you might want to run ./configure with --enable-nm=yes, to avoid having pidgin trying to login to all the servers before you're even connected to the net.

OH and Pidgin looks really neat. They've added loads of small features and revamped the look and icons. I only really use msn but they've added more support for custom animations and all display pics seem to work now.

Well, it takes a little while for the packages to be compiled by the maintainers (they're volunteers AFAIK), and there may be breakages that might need to be resolved. So it may take a week or so.

I get this same problem. I want to be able to compile from source code, as it seems like a pretty key skill for a linux user.

it may be the update to beta 6, but it hasn't been out very long so it's probably still considered to be "unstable" and since this is the first release under the name Pidgin, the Ubuntu team would have to go in and make a lot of changes to meta-packages (gnome, ubuntu-desktop, etc) in order for them to point to Pidgin AND Gaim (for people who don't want to upgrade)...it seems like it would be a huge pain and i believe one of the Ubuntu devs said they're not going over to Pidgin until Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) because it's too much hassle to change it in Feisty

I have just installed pidgin 2.0 on an Ubuntu 6.10 system and attempted to log on to my MSN Messenger account but when i try to connect i am getting the error message that "SSL support is needed for MSN. Please install a supported SSL library." I am now at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions.

I am trying to install Pidgin 2.0 final release on Fiesty Fawn. I did configure, make, make install and everything worked fine but when I try to run Pidgin I get this error:
pidgin: error while loading shared libraries: libpurple.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I've done a bunch of searching but haven't found any solutions to it yet. I also tried installing a DEB that was posted but it complains that Gaim is conflicting. Any ideas how to get either the source or the DEB to work? Thanks.

Downgrade to checkinstall 1.6.0 and this problem should be fixed

I am trying to install Pidgin 2.0 final release on Fiesty Fawn. I did configure, make, make install and everything worked fine but when I try to run Pidgin I get this error:
pidgin: error while loading shared libraries: libpurple.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I've done a bunch of searching but haven't found any solutions to it yet. I also tried installing a DEB that was posted but it complains that Gaim is conflicting. Any ideas how to get either the source or the DEB to work? Thanks.

I got the same problem here, installed with the rpm converted to deb by alien. The other thing is that I did a make install from pidgin source at beta7 and when I installed using the converted deb, it still goes to /usr/local/bin/pidgin rather than /usr/bin/pidgin. When i do run /usr/bin/pidgin, i get the error mentioned above.

I have just installed pidgin 2.0 on an Ubuntu 6.10 system and attempted to log on to my MSN Messenger account but when i try to connect i am getting the error message that "SSL support is needed for MSN. Please install a supported SSL library." I am now at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions.

My experience with Instant Messaging is minimal.
However, I was persuaded by a young friend to set up an MSN account (she uses Windows).
So, I thought Pidgin would allow me to communicate with her from my (new) MSN account without having to switch out of Ubuntu.
I also saw this as an opportunity to impress her with the versatility of Ubuntu/Linux towards which previous attempts have not gone down too well (although the Beryl cube at least drew a few gasps of awe and wonder).
I got Pidgin installed without any problems and it works fine. But, it apparently doesn't allow voice communication through MSN.
Unfortunately, this has resulted in a very black mark against Linux in the eyes of my friend.

So, is that it...it just can't be done or has Pidgin got a trick up its sleeve?

If you want to use voice, then just install Skype. www.skype.com has a Ubuntu repository.

When at all possible, I recommend using prevu to build packages. I think it's in the repositories now, so the following steps should set it up for you:

sudo apt-get install prevu
sudo prevu-init

Prevu init will occasionally fail. If that happens, just try running it again. It works by creating a chroot environment (essentially, a condensed linux installation) and compressing it. When you run "prevu" in a source directory, it will unpack that chroot, install packages to it, build your package, and then throw away any changes it made to that chroot. At the end, if will put all packages it makes into "/var/cache/prevu/{distro}-debs" where distro is your current ubuntu version. If you're running feisty, it will be feisty-debs.

Provided that you rarely ever use Ctrl + C to interrupt a prevu build, it shouldn't take up a lot of space on your drive. If you do interrupt a build, just clear out the contents of the "/var/cache/prevu/build" directory to get the space back.

Pidgin is now in Debian Unstable ('http://packages.debian.org/unstable/source/pidgin'), which means you can just grab their source and build it without making too many changes. I know of only one change off the top of my head: in debian/rules, there's a line like this: "cp build/doc/html/*.{html png gif}". When you try to build it in ubuntu, it fails on this line. I changed it to "cp build/doc/html/*", which is not an optimal solution, but it works.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish. Why were you trying to build gaim from source? If you want to install the latest version of pidgin you can download a .deb from http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Pidgin

There will be a dependency error when you try to install the pidgin deb, (a confict with gaim-data) you can remove gaim gaim-data and ubuntu-desktop to install it. After pidgin is installed from the deb if you reinstall ubuntu-desktop again you will have gaim and pidgin installed.

is there not a way to change the font sizes in the buddy list? i've tried the GTK+ plugin that is in there by default as well as installing extended-prefs (which doesn't seem to work).

the only way i can seem to get the font size to change is by changing the system wide applicaiton font under front preferences (for gnome, not just pidgin). anyone have any better ideas?

Which devs did you install?

I installed the libssl-dev .9.8.b-2ubuntu2 in Synaptic, recompiled, but still have the SSL/MSN issue.

Edit: Nevermind, I found it! It's GnuTLS.

Both MSN and Google Talk via Jabber work now. :)

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish. Why were you trying to build gaim from source? If you want to install the latest version of pidgin you can download a .deb from http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Pidgin

There will be a dependency error when you try to install the pidgin deb, (a confict with gaim-data) you can remove gaim gaim-data and ubuntu-desktop to install it. After pidgin is installed from the deb if you reinstall ubuntu-desktop again you will have gaim and pidgin installed.

Getdeb.net? I'm not installing any flippin deb from there. The person who made those debs doesn't know what he's doing. I'll use debs from official ubuntu repositories, but for this one I'll compile my own.

I'm not building gaim from source. That command was to help me get dev packages needed to build Feisty. Even the guide on the first post of this forum says to do that.

I have installed Pidgin using the Deb package available in GetDeb.net and it works properly but I'm looking for development files that are not included in main Pidgin package. Does anybody know where I can get them?

Basically I'm trying to install a plugin for Pidgin called Music Tracker (http://code.google.com/p/musictracker/) which displays information about the track you are listening in your status message but it needs those development files for compiling.

Any solution for this?

- In the contacts menu is there a way I can sort contacts per 'account' - like I have 3 accounts (2 MSN and 1 AIM) and it mixes the groups together and I really need them separate
- Where to download more plugins ?
- Where to download more themes or how to customise the appearance ?

I compiled Pidgin with no problems and it basicly works , however i am unable to get the links posted in IM chat to open with firefox by clicking on them like it worked in gaim or any of the new email notifications except msn to work when you select Open Mail.

Anyone know what the problem could be ?

However I would really like my own attempt at creating a package to work if only as a way of learning. So hopefully someone could be able to tell me where I'm going wrong. tried reinstalling via adept and it won't do it. I tried reinstalling the beta and nothing.

Yes, one can compile it, which is what this thread is about. But Artemis3 said that wasn't necessary because it's "in the repositories in feisty."

My mistake indeed. They even removed the gaim to pidgin dummy package.
It is in the debuntu repository (http://repository.debuntu.org/), i suppose ubuntu will not touch pidgin until gutsy.

I just compiled and installed it on a clean xubuntu installation.

1. I followed the 2 first step in this howto

2. Downloaded and unpacked the latest sourcecode...

3.Then in terminal I did:
cd /home/username/pidgin-2.0.2

4../configure

5.make

6.sudo make install

It all went perfectly well without any errors....

Trying to get this to work. Everything seemed to install quite well on my Kubuntu 7.04 but when I go to add an icq buddy I get:

Unable to Add
Could not add the buddy ###ICQNUMBERHERE### for an unknown reason,
The most common reason for this is that you have the
maximum number of allowed buddies in your buddy list.

it worked fine for me. I downloaded the source and
sudo apt-get build-dep gaim-otr
./configure
make
sudo make install
and then restart pidgin, it worked fine.

If after compiling from source you get the error "cannot load libpurple.so.0" or similar... it could be because it was installed to /usr/local/lib instead of /usr/lib.

I had this tonight after compiling the latest version 2.1.1 from source.

make a symbolic link fixes it.

ln -s /usr/local/lib/libpurple.so.0 /usr/lib/

you can copy the output of sudo apt-get build-dep gaim and install them with sudo apt-get install ***pasted packages***. Then just remove them using console history after you've compiled pidgin.

How do I get it added to the "Program"-menu? Now I have to run it with "pidgin" in the terminal. Also, do I still need the directory I extracted the source and compiled the app in?

For those who are facing problems with checkinstall trying to overwrite files in /usr/bin (eg./usr/bin/ld), here's a quick fix for it:

1) Run checkinstall with the --inspect option (ie. checkinstall --inspect -D)

2) Upon successful compilation, checkinstall will prompt if you would like to review the files to be included in the pacakage. Choose "Yes"

3) Vi will be started and you will see a list of files which will be included in the package. Remove all the lines that do not contain the word "Purple" or "Pidgin"

**To delete lines in Vi, press the "d" key twice. To delete multiple lines (eg. 5 lines), type "5dd". **

4) Once that is done, all the necessary pidgin files will be included only and the creation and installation of the .deb file should be 100% successful.
