and somewhat stupid question: How is the Mac OS versions named; and why is the last version called OS X ("ten" I am assuming). I see the new version will be Mac OS X 10.5. Why 10.5 and not Mac OS 11??
I am interested in trying a Mac (proly a MacPro). And when will OS X 10.5 leopard be released?
Thanks

For the history of classic Mac OS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_history
For th history of Mac OS X:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Mac_OS_X
If you follow the titles of the classic OS, it was call Software System X or System X for verisions 1-7. At 8 and 9 they changed the name to OS 8 and OS 9 respectively. When they brought out the 10th OS they called in OS X. Perhaps they decided to use X instead of 10 to emphasize that the Mac OS is an entirely new beast. Similar to minor changes in the name at System 7 and OS 8 where there was some big changes to the Mac OS.

Spring is more abstract: Northern or southern hemisphere?? I am in in the South and our spring starts in Sept. June sounds more concrete. but which is correct?
Should I wait for the final release to purchase a MacPro with Leopard, or will I be able to upgrade free??

Expect it to come out sometime between now (not likely) and June (more likely).
Unless you purchase your Mac about two weeks before Leopard's release, you most likely will not be able to upgrade for free. If you don't need a Mac Pro now, I would advise you to wait. Not only will you get the latest version of Mac OS X, but you will also get the latest version of iLife.
Of course, if you really need it now, then there's no sense in waiting.

I will wait then; I also like the idea of boot camp and able to boot Windows XP/Vista through the MacOSX,
