Is there a Visio viewer/editor for Linux?

Is there a way to open and/or edit Visio files on Feisty Fawn?

Architecture: AMD64 (AM2)

I have several files from work that I need to be able to edit from home; however, I have Linux at home. Any input is appreciated.

You can check out Kivio (KDE) or Dia (GNOME), or even use OpenOffice's Draw depending on what you want.

Microsoft Office works alright (I've only checked 2003) in WINE so you could even run Visio through that if you like.

I hate to be the one to say this but COME ON. A simple Google search could've told you this. I haven't checked but I'm sure even searching these forums you could've found SOMETHING.

It's MORE work so put a post on Ubuntu Forums than it is to type "visio linux" in google.

The truth is, that i like to use google to find answers myself and in fact yesterday i used it for same question and couldnt find an answer, but somehow i gave up because wasnt that important. I have Inskape and thought that it might do the work.. but still didnt work.

Your two suggestions were interesting. I installed kivio and still doesnt do the work. And i admit, that it is a program or application similar to visio, but maybe what he (and I) need, it is an application or filter that it is capable to open files, that have been created in visio format (.vsd)

Anyway...as the previous poster said..there is no need to generate bad atmosphere, if you know the answer and want to answer fine...if not, fine too, there is no need to give lessons to anyone.

Sorry for been annoying, but i think the best of ubuntu, its maybe the ubuntu forums, and the reason for that it is probably the helpfull people.

It is true, I need to be able to open *.vsd files, and I have used Dia but I don't seem to be able to get it to open the documents properly.

FYI cisforcojo I Installed the Edgy Eft 64 bit version of this OS three weeks ago, and none of the chipsets on my board were recognized I had 3 weeks of grief and finally got the issues corrected. The reason I asked on this forum is that I was tired of getting half baked answers from people, installing the wrong updates and having issues. I am new here (2 week member) and thought I would have better luck on the forum. sorry for the trouble...but then again you didn't need to reply if it bothered you. If you truly "hated to be the one to say it..." you shouldn't have!

I appolagize if this rubs anyone the wrong way but the response from cisforcojo was quite rude.

This is not about visio replacements, but visio files as far as i see.

Perhaps http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888700 together with http://lx-viewer.sourceforge.net/ can do something.

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=119 looks pretty bad.

I will try your solution, it looks promising. I have tried to export the Visio format converting it to *.svg which is able to be opened by both Visio, and Dia; however, the diagram is messed up a fair amount when Dia opens it, and I have to resize the objects and move them them around a fair amount to make them work. I believe that converting the images back and forth may be a problem. Perhaps I am simply using the wrong format. I tried *.svg on the suggestion of an equally ignorant but well meaning friend, and it did allow me to work with the diagrams but not without issue. I will play with this a bit and post what I find...right or wrong.

No harm no foul. I do appreciate the input and I was taken aback and didn't respond well. for the record I have "Goggled" this issue and I am still having some issues with the suggested solutions. As I mentioned I am new to this OS and every time I fix one thing 2 more go wrong. I would use a more stable kernel but I was unable to fix some of the issues. So I will struggle with the beta release, it seems to fix more than it breaks. I will remember that it is a beta.

Hi ,

i guess i was the one that mentioned inkscape and even though it is quite similar to visio, i havent managed to open any file created in visio. Maybe im doing it wrong, but i have tried at work to convert the files to all possible formats, but still Inkscape cant open them. I havent tried though convert it to autocad.

I have tried kivio as you suggested, but it seems that when you try to import it asks you if you want to import it as xml doc or kivio doc, so it feels to me like if someone will have some visio filter, kivio could do it. Now the thing it is, how to get the visio filter :D

I will still give a try to dia, but i guess that i will stick to Inkscape, its very nice tool.

I hope someone finds a solution, would be great.
