could someone gimme some pros and cons about whether to use wine or cedega for gaming? i've used wine before and while i got used to it i wasn't really impressed with the mechanics. i've heard cedega has some advantages to it but its only downfall is having to pay. my main goal is to run wow on ubuntu and i would just like to know which would be the easiest or give me the best results.

If wow is all id say wine... I run both depending on the game, for some odd reason, some install and run easier in one app than the other... Wine is great but last i checked lacked directx 9.0c i think capabilities... and cedega is awesome cept it costs money and has many bugs and glitches of its own.

most will swear by wine alone though... for some odd reason a lot of people have troubles getting cedega to do what they want it to, though i havent had a problem with much yet

personally speaking i got wow to install and run much better within wine than cedega but i use cedega for city of heroes and diablo 2

It depends really of the game, i lately installed the latest wine (0.34) and i have now far more better results with wine than with cedega running this game at both performances and stability level. CS:S just runs great now.
Things are moving a lot this year with wine and the directX support is getting really good.
Whereas cedega support more games and sometimes offer better performances (depends really of the game) it is really buggy (my opinion) compared to wine. I never got all the bug and crash i had with cedega with wine.

Check here to see if your game is well supported by wine :

Wine. I've used both, Cedega is essentially rubbish.

Wine here too. I used to use cedega - then I tried Wine, and have never looked back. :] Neither has my wallet.

I used Cedega Engine Version : 6.0.2 and wine-0.9.XX , where XX varies from 25-42. I will say that the current wine gives excellent directx support and runs few games and most non-game software better than cedega. wine is also very easy to install. But some game with cd-checking,cd-protection etc cedega may be a better option.

Wine works well for most things now - and its free. Give it a spin first and see if it does it for you, if not try out the demo of cedega and see if its any different.

ROFLMAO! Dude, you totally missed the whole thread resurrection discussion. Looks like this is going to be an active thread again...

Also, Cedega doesn't offer a demo anymore.
