Is DirectX better than OpenGL, or is OpenGL better than DirectX? (Not in terms of compatibility, just in terms of which is actually better).

DirectX is a whole suite of just not Graphics API's but network, sound, input and graphics. OpenGL is just a graphics library and as such you can't really compare the two.
you could however compare Direct3d (the graphics library of directx) to OpenGL. However im not sure that one is better than the other as the ps3 and wii for example use OpenGL whereas Xbox360 uses Direct3d, similar could be compared on pc via Doom engine vs say Source engine.
