hmmm it occured to me that it would kick serious *** if there was a way to install the ubuntu guide by default with lets say the document as a pdf file with, get this PICTURES FOR GOD'S SAKE. Granted not everyone needs them but as soon as ubuntu gets a graphical installer even a graphical pdf will seem slightly outdated but it would be a great step in the right direction, next of course would come those awesome kickass flash demos lol

I'm considering creating a guide addressing the common questions that new users have: how to install software (and what software to use)? Getting Java, Flash, multimedia working. etc. I also wanted to provide instructions using both graphical and commandline methods and give some info (not too much!) on what and why we're doing these things, not just "do this and this and this".
I intend to target breezy for this, all the instructions and pictures using a pristine breezy install. Originally, I was going to set up a web site for this, but I think a pdf might be better.
Is this the kind of thing we're going for? If not, I'll be on my way.

The best way will be to integrate in Ubuntu/Gnome Help.
I have install some intros which uses to put a desktop icon with a "How to start"
Windows also do something like this.
It would be necessary to talk to Ubuntu Developers to integrate this, because if it isn't integrated in a new Ubuntu Installation, it won't be the same.

So subscribe to http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-doc or go to #ubuntu-doc on freenode, so that we can all work together. Also rather than pdf, the standard is the docbook format.

The Ubuntuguide was supposed to be installed like this in Hoary, as I understand, but the fact that the project is a one-man-show made the doc team drop it. Joining the doc team is the way to go.
I would also recomment the forum-wiki delta
http://test.wiki.ubuntu.com/forum
It is a place for you to put documentation so that the doc team can easily pick it up and improve it. I would strongly encourage you to use that.
Jday, you can create a subpage for comon questions there yourself, if you like. I hope that the forum-wiki delta will become engrained into the forum culture and that it become an always-current reference.
And yes, the wiki supports pictures!

Please, don't work outside the doc team. To be honest, ubuntuguide.org is slowly coming towards what we(the doc team) want, but it has been a long, slow and quite painful process. Please don't make us do it again.

I must say that the first time welcome in windows xp is awesome, even my mum understood it. But there are two problems if you want to make a flash intro:
1. Language. Ubuntu is able to install every possible language from a single cd (unlike Windows, a cd version for each language). But a flash intro for each language supported would take a lot of space :P
2. Flash? Accept it, Ubuntu is all free, and that means no flash from a fresh install.
So what does this mean? No flash intro for ubuntu (Although it would simply rock).
I'm all for intros and tutorials. In fact, I find the "First time user intro" idea excellent. But seriously, what would you put in the intro? :/

I found this by accident, since i wanted a manual like i got with SuSE to perhaps ship with shippit or by for a quid i set out to write one, someone else jumped on board but after sending him what i had i have recieved no word, so who do i email with what i have?
Simply put i switched from SuSE to ubuntu and didn't know how to install anything, if a manual detailing installation and use were to come in the works i would help out best i could, since i am no programmer... yet ;) (another 4 years) i might as well try and help with the documentation

I'm still seeing ppl ask "how to install", why not create a script that runs upon install and have the user say "yes/no" and install all the multi-media apps (java, totem, beep, streamtuner)...etc.. I cannot remember but someone made a GREAT EXCELLENT EASY TO USE script for installing and its worked for me, 100%! My memory is bad, but its a simple drop to root, run a script an blam its all installed), which I could remember the article thread its great!
This way Ubuntu doesn't get "nailed" for having installed multimedia, it still up to the user (give a nice warning that states "may not be usuable" or "not responsible for contents installed")...
just a thought... \\:D/

the doc-team's mailing list is ubuntu-doc@lists.ubuntu.com, they can also be found on the wiki (search for doc-team) or on freenode at #ubuntu-doc
