I'm a Mass Communication major at USF and right now I am using an HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop dual booted with XP and Ubuntu Edgy. Also, I have a film company and am really into working with digital media (pictures video music). Lets just say, this laptop isn't doing much for me and it was really cheap (you get what you pay for i guess). I've been interested in getting a Mac because I've played around with all the digital media programs on them. The only problem is, I can't decide whether to get a macbook or an iMac. If anyone is a Mass Comm major or a Computer science major (i might end up minoring in it) and knows if I'm going to havta bring a computer around to classes alot, please i would love some feedback and suggestions. thanks so much!

If you're going to be taking a computer to classes, you'll obviously want to go with the MacBook. The iMac, however, would have more HD space on it, which is better for multimedia projects and such. You'll also get a better video card in the iMac.
And just a reminder, make sure you get the education discount.

How about the new Toshiba satillites? you dont have to limit yourself to an Apple. Those new Toshiba laptop's got massive power and quite portable.

They don't quite come with OS X, do they? :)

I chose a macbook, and i've never regretted it for a single second. When i'm working from home - i often just connect it to my external flat-screen monitor, plugin my apple keyboard and mouse then i have the best of both worlds!
Storage isn't an issue either, i picked up a nice 160gb external firewire drive for £50! And the 80-120 gb the macbook comes with is more than enough for when your on the go (and it's not difficult to shove the external in your bag if needs be).
have fun,

i would go with the iMac for a few reasons.
first i have a macbook, 2.0ghz, gig of ram... great laptop for students and office projects, not so great if one were to do digital imaging and video editing. the iMac is a solid desktop, whereas the macbook has many heat and fan issues because the core duo is hotter than rock in the desert. furthermore, the macbook (white color) gets extremely dirty because of the oils and minute amounts of dirt on hand/palms.
in short, macbook is great for the road but iMac is great for production.

try as they might, windows and pc's cannot compete with macs in the digital world. grated vista is an improvement but i still choose OSX anyday.

I use my macbook for music production - it is yet to choke or stutter, regardless of what i throw at it.
