View Full Version : Ubuntu has nothing for medicine!!

This is shocking! I have been using ubuntu for quite some time.

Here I discover a forum category for clinicians ...and what do I see - not evena single post. Where are you guys? And what have you been doing all the time. I can't believe ther is nothing for us. I did come across a kubuntu ported distro sometime back for clinics ..was FreeMed or something like that.

So if you are a newbie and came here looking for some medical software, then all I can say is - Welcome aboard! Take a seat, roll up your sleeves and get working.

Lets find something here for the sake of medicine!

Is this a new part of the forum?

I'm excited!

Right now, I'm working (aww, just as an office worker, I'm still in college) for a neurodiagnostics office, but this would be most immediately useful for free clinics. :)

I love to see stuff like this. I'm not a doctor, but I wish there was something similar for us Finance guys. Best of Luck!

Yes, this is a new forum added here. Our project is only just getting off its feet; we've nearly got our first testing release ready, and expect it to be released within the next few days. Once that's released, we expect to see a surge of activity in both this forum and on our own forum on our website.

In the meantime, please feel free to check out our site and have a look around:

If you've got any questions, comments, or just a word of encouragement, we'd love to hear from you.

And I'm Charlie and I'm involved with the LFC project as well.

Justin I have a word of advice for you...Instead of just hoping for something like this for finance guys you have to hop in with both feet and get it started:) It really is a long process to get it all done. But it's a fun learning experience the whole time.

Very true. When this project started it was just Charlie. I saw the project mentioned in UF and signed up. Charlie made some friends in other forums, got to use their forumspace, recruited and today we are a full-fledged project with a good team and it only took a few months (with some delays due to busted computers, broken spines, and so forth :P). And none of us are linux gurus. We're pretty much learning as we go and learning quickly at that!

Without a doubt, there are others feeling the same way you are. Start a project. Get the word out intelligently by posting word of your project in the forums of financial groups. It won't take too long before people start coming to you to help out.

Welcome back to the ubuntuforums.org forum, Also congratulations on your hardwork and success...I am glad to see that you have returned to Ubuntu as your base OS.

Are you still using the PCLinuxOS based version or have you transitioned to Ubuntu completely now? I thought you guys were using PCLinuxOS as a base in the past?

Anyway glad to see both Charlie and Dave back to the ubuntuforums.org membership and glad to see LnuxForClinics using Ubuntu as their base OS

Also do you have links to download the Ubuntu based version of LFC,....so ubuntuforums.org members here can try it out?

First of all, thanks for your welcome and thanks for visiting.

Are you still using the PCLinuxOS based version or have you transitioned to Ubuntu completely now? I thought you guys were using PCLinuxOS as a base in the past?We have indeed considered various distros as a base. Something I believe is an absolute must when starting such a project as Linux for Clinics.
After careful consideration - as a project - decided to use Ubuntu as a base distro.

Also do you have links to download the Ubuntu based version of LFC,....so ubuntuforums.org members here can try it out?
The current status of the project is that we are in the process of creating a beta version.
As soon as we have that finalized and available for the mass, we surely be posting this information. As a project we hope we can make this announcement soon, so please follow our project closely.

Thanks for the welcome, Jozef.

Resa has already answered your questions in some detail, but yes we are using Ubuntu as our base. We did at one point go into trying out PCLOS, but their 2007 release has been plagued with problems and is quite long overdue. We reached the decision that Ubuntu would be a more reliable base distribution.

We will have a testing ISO released very shortly (likely within the next few days, but we don't have a set date) which you can download if you'd like to try it out.

Nice to see a medic branch of Ubuntu growing up, have you considered adding something like the script to install F@H to a more prominent position in your distro as it is obviously medic related, and also would utilise all that excess processing power which the majority of clinics who have pcs on a lot of the time currently waste idling.

To be honest -- no we have not. However, thank you for pointing this out.

I must say that I had heard of the project, but never really considered it seriously (personally). Since indeed it is medic related we might have to give this consideration, if only to create awareness of the project.

At this point in time I don't know if we would incorporate the script, but what seems to me like a possible "in-between" solution is to create a link to the project homepage which is default in the Bookmarks list.

Please feel free - in the meantime - to also post such suggestions (should you have more) in the LFC Forum (http://linuxforclinics.org/forums/). And while doing so also peek around to see what we have been up to and have achieved so far ;)

EDIT: Based on your suggestion I did start this thread (http://linuxforclinics.org/forums/index.php?topic=1214.0) at the LFC forum

That's a great idea. I'll keep it in mind and make sure it receives serious consideration; if there are no technical reasons why it can't be included, I'd love to see it in the distro.

We will host our own repos in the future and will likely include this, other @Home prorgams and anything else we can discover or have pointed out to us that may be of use.
