gtkwifi help

Hi, I was introducing a friend of mine to Ubuntu, and he really couldn't get into it without the internet. He has a cisco linksys adapter, I attempted to use the gtkwifi thing a few months ago, but I have no idea how to configure it. Any help is nice, if you need more details on his equipment, be prepared to wait a day or so.

Also, are there any advantages to having madwifi drivers? I could really use an explination for all of this.
