It's a known issue that U_6.06x64 and ASUS_M2N onboard-sound do NOT play nice. I "solved" the problem by disabling OB_sound in BIOS, and installing a NONAME 32_bit card from a local JAX computer shop.
The card is immediately recognized , and reported as:
CMEDIA PCI CM18738
Works the 1st time: cost = $32.
