Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but seeing as I'm using 64-bit ubuntu I figure it's as good a place as any.
Does anyone know how to get the windows key to work on the keyboard? I've noticed that kde programmes recognize it when I'm setting shortcut keys, but once I'me outside of that screen, my windows keys are as good as dead.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Douglas

lol
The windows key is really useful for things like switching through virtual desktops and such. Like alt+tab=window switcher and win+tab=desktop switcher.
Btw,I just went into preferences and now when i hold down the win key and drag any part of a window it moves the window. Which leads me to believe that there is some way to get it to work globally. Any suggestions for that?

I configured the left Win key to open a new Terminal window. Since the terminal is frequently used, I thought it would be a good idea to use this key to open it.

Nice... How'd you get it to work?

I'm not at home right now, so I can't precisely give you the directions. But it's under System > Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts. One of those options is related to the key combination in order to run the terminal.
When I get home I'll come back with the exact instructions.
Edit: Sorry, I just noticed you're talking about KDE, but I'm a gnome user. Anyway, I'll give the instructions later.

No... I am a gnome user as well, but use some kde programs (amarok being the major one) and i noticed that in trying to set the keyboard shortcuts if i press that "grab key" button it says i'm holding down the windows key when i hold it down. But when I try to use it to execute that same shortcut i just set, there is no response. Also if i use beryl or any other program that isn't definitely kde, no response at all even if i do the grab key thing (except for that one time i said above)

Fortunately, I was in the right direction. Here it is:
System > Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts; then
Desktop > Run the terminal
Click on it; it will ask for a new accelerator.
And for drag-and-drop windows, you can just hold Left Alt and left-click the desired window. :)

Specifically try this, although I'm not sure what you want your windows key to do?
System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layout Options
Change the Alt/Win Key behaviour from *Default* to *Super is mapped to the Win-Keys (Default)*
