Mutagenix is a suite of Slackware based LiveCDs. Currently (2.6.18.6), the suite consists of a rescue disk and a KDE desktop disk -- I am looking for a reasonable GNOME install to use for the Mutagenix GNOME disk. The desktop's each have the rescue disk as the underpinning foundation with all the tools that come with a rescue disk available.
Mutagenix is built on Slackware Linux (http://slackware.com/) and uses Slapt-get (http://jaos.org/) as the foundation for the Mutagenix build system. A simple hard-drive installation tool is included. The build system is available for download in the download sections and includes copious notes on building the kernel and supporting software for making your own LiveCD.
It is also extremely easy to boot up on Mutagenix, add and remove programs, configure to your taste and then remaster a new CD image. Burn it to disk and you have your own customized Mutagenix LiveCD.

Bugs!
The Hard Drive installer is excluding some necessary device files during install, causing a harddrive boot to fail by trying to run e2fsck and then dropping to single user mode. We are working on an updated installer and will announce when it is ready to be retrieved from the Mutagenix slapt-get repository.
There is a workaround for this problem. If you are interested in trying it before the installer is ready, please join the mailing list.
