Hi, Guys!

I had some spare time on my hands and decided to dowload SUSE 10.3 Alpha 2

Taking into account that it is only still only in Alpha 2 phase, I still was very surprised at how buggy it is.

I only tried the GNOME version, so I can't coment on the KDE version.

However, a large proportion of the applications that installed automatically did not run. Some crashed and others did not even open.

One nice feature, though was that it had no problem with my 1280 X 800 widescreen laptop. After install I just went into setup and it scanned my Intel graphics chipset and LCD and suggested 1280 X 800 straight up and all I had to do was select the bit depth from a drop down.

This is MUCH better than with Ubuntu, which is a nightmare for newbies, running 915resolution and patching it manually.

This is two distros that I have come across now that is much friendlier in this regard. The other was Mandriva.

I hope that with the release of Feisty, Ubunto has caught-up with video setup.

I cannot comment whether SUSE is as friendly with nVidia and ATI video cards, as I have not used it with these.

In summary, Ubuntu has nothing to fear from Novell, when they release SUSE 10.3. In most respects, it isn't even up to Edgy standards.

Regards,
Roger

Yeah, because the title "alpha" doesn't speak to it's stability and bugginess.
