Try following this guide, if you are having problems installing it.
But it sounds like you are having problems getting it to run once you have it installed...
So first, some basic questions:
Do you have 3D acceleration enabled, and is your video card driver installed correctly?
What *exactly* doesn't work? Like, does the splash screen come up at all?
Have you tried running it from the terminal? If so, could you post any output/errors?

You do not need Wine for ut2k4, it has a linux native installer.
It is a popular practice to copy the ut2k4 .sh install file onto the desktop & run it from there. I have always done it that way, with no problems.
I hope this helps...

I'm experiencing the same or similar thing
tso@tso-desktop:~$ glxinfo |grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
tso@tso-desktop:~$
so that much is cool but now that Linux port of UT2004 is installed, when launching I get a UT splash screen for 0.1 seconds and then nothing. So when I drop to terminal and run
tso@tso-desktop:~/Desktop$ ls
envy_0.9.1-0ubuntu3_all.deb ut2004
tso@tso-desktop:~/Desktop$ ut2004
Can't find 'ini:Engine.Engine.GameEngine' in configuration file
History:
Exiting due to error
tsor@tso-desktop:~/Desktop$
in properties of the file, the path is /usr/local/games/ut2004//ut2004
getting closer, what am I doing wrong ? This is the shortcut UT dropped on the desktop for me.
Oh, and I get the same error if I cd /usr/local/games/ut2004 and launch it.
from my other post (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=386948&page=3) (thru Envy finally got driver installed and gears to run)
