There are Bittorrent programs for Mac. Azeurus works on Mac OS X, and Transmission is a popular and lightweight client.

From what I remember, the state of torrent programs for Mac is fairly sad. Not including the official client and Azureus, all the programs seem to have some sort of issue that cause a lot of trackers to block them.
Azureus is no good (at least to me), because it's so bloated for an app that should stay in the background, and the official client is a little sparing in features.

Transmission is one of those clients that gets banned from some trackers. Something about making multiple announcements.
Another option is Bitrocket. It looks promising but seems a little unstable.

I've found no issues like this at all, i'm running on macbook 2ghz c2d. It dosen't cause any apps (even music production) to slow down whatsoever.
I also seem to get much higher DL/UL speeds with azureus than i do with all the other clients.
New builds are being released all the time - it's constantly improving.
