View Full Version : Renaming "Desktop Environments" to "Desktop Environments & Applications"?

Hello.

I recently posted a thread here called "Eyecandy forum?", calling for a division between topics on desktop functionality and applications on one hand and on eyecandy-topics on the other. The result was that this was taken up in the Forum Council, and a new forum, "Desktop Effects & Customization" was created. The original thread got merged with two earlier threads, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=375998 .

Now that this change has been made, I think a new, more descriptive name for the "general" desktop forum would be in order. My suggestion for naming these two forums is the following:

"Desktop Effects & Customization" - the looks: eyecandy, (IMO) theming etc. (The current name is spot on.)
"Desktop Environments & Applications - everyday use: general applications, office applications, configuring what the mouse buttons do, etc. (The questions on applications rightly get asked here, so I think it wouldn't hurt to name it in the forum title too.)

In addition we still have "Multimedia & Video" for the audio & video applications related topics.

Is this a 'for your information' post, or a request of some kind? It's a little unclear (to me at least, and not that I can grant requests either, just interested!). As far as I can tell, the main content of your original idea was actually implemented (congrats!).

It is, shall we say, "a modest proposal" for the forum staff to consider. As I wrote, I think it's an easy clarification that could be made, and that I think would be useful. (Unless someone comes up with a better idea.)

Thanks for your interest. I thought the division of topics into these two categories would make sense, and voiced the idea. Thankfully, someone else also thought it would make sense, and indeed the main content of it was implemented. :-)
