as you probably you all know Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 has just been launched yesterday. what are your feelings about this? does anybody around plan to use it on servers/clusters/mainframes etc? I never used red hat linux, I think 9 was their last desktop version

they still produce a desktop version
simply isn't free of charge
(source code is available infact centOS exists)

I know about centos, I played with a live cd of them some time ago...though I didn't like it that much. I'm sure it's rock solid, but the applications seemed outdated :D

When someone says "desktop" they're typically referring to the end-user desktop. Something an end-user might want on their desktop would be good repos, reasonably up to date software, etc. You won't find that in RHEL's offerings to my knowledge.
