Don't you just love when AOL is nice enough to send you free clam shell DVD cases? I know I sure do. One of the best things to do with these cases is to place the original CD in the microwave for a spectacular light show and replace it with much more useful software.
I have created a clam shell DVD case cover (draft copy right now). I used Inkscape, standard Ubuntu SVG logos, and the color pallete which can be found at http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/UbuntuArtwork
I would like your opinions regarding the cover. This thread would probably be a pretty good place to post any derivative or additional works (oh, yeah, this is free to modify, distribute and blah blah blah). I would also like to create an insert for the interior of the DVD case with install instructions or something. perhaps I'll make a quick start guide with information on installation, add repositories, and adding software.
Below is a thumbnail image of the cover, which is followed by links to a full sized PNG image and the original SVG image.

I don't, the front looks good, the only thing I think it needs is the screen shots for the back and Breezy (http://ubuntu.tux.com.au/gallery).

There was a font created but the person that did was not willing to release it without the blessing of Canonical. There was discussion on whether she she was legally entitled to release it without their consent, she didn't care either way, no consent no release.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. It's always nice to know that someone else appreciates your work.

The cover could certainly use something, but I'm not sure what. I thought about the three humans in a circle, but that just looks a little weird to me. What would people think if their child came home with a DVD with three half naked people on it? There are also several other reasons to stay away from images of real people.
I have thought about Breezy on the cover. I would not give him a prominent position like in the center because I think it would take away from the Ubuntu logo and I enjoy the white (brown?) space. I think I would put the badger above the edition/version information or maybe in the lower right corner of the front cover. Does anyone know where I can get some nice SVG images of Breezy? Perhaps the original files from the images hazza96 linked to?
What about just the top of his head, sort of poking up from the bottom looking up at the logo?
I like this idea. I was thinking that it might be cool to extend the orange edition bar on the front to give enough room to have a bust of Breezy with its right arm draped over the orange bar. I think I would have Breezy looking out at the user where there is live action and not at a such a static, plain logo. But I really have no idea which one would look better. It's something that I'll have to brute over for a little while. The lack of both suitable images of Breezy and personal artistic tallent is what's holding be back from moving down this path right now.
Could you make a Kubuntu cover?
I'm really not familiar with Kubuntu. Would there be a difference in anything other than spelling? Don't forget that this is Canonical's logo and it wouldn't be proper to modify it without their permission. Do you think keeping this cover the way it is with the edition of a "Kubuntu Edition" logo under the main logo or something like that?
Here's an update to what I have done. The most recent SVG file (shown in the thumbnail) can be found at the link below. I've also added a ZIP file of my project directory (below). In it are all of the files that I am working with.
Changes:
Lowered and made less wide the logo on the spine. After I printed it out and put it in a case it just looked a little naked witht he logo way up top.
Slightly lowered the front cover logo. I think the space between the front cover logo and the version/edition information on the front cover should have the same approximate value. I may lower it a bit more than where it's been moved to now.
Added screen shots. This is for obvious reasons. The screen shots are meant to be place holders until I fine a moment on my desktop that inspires me.
Added the OSI (http://www.opensource.org/) "OpenSource" logo to the bottom of the spine. That little white block must seemed like it wanted to be filled with something. This also helps with some of the nakedness on the spine. One problem is that the OSI logo is a scalar and not a vector graphic (so are the screen shots, of course). Can anyone find an svg of the logo?

It sure would be great if the Captain would create the necessary artwork of Breezy. I think this project might turn out pretty nice.
I just sent him the following message.
Subject: Breezy Artwork
Hello, Captain. I've taken a look at your Breezy images and think they're pretty nice. In fact, I was hoping to use Breezy in a little project of my own. I'm making a clam shell DVD cover, the discussion of which can be found at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38345.
Would it be possible to have some SVG images or possibly the source art files? Also, would you be interested in creating the artwork of Breezy described in the following post in the future? http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=196224#post196224
Thanks for you time.

I've also just sent OSI the following message regarding the usage of their logo.
Subject: "Open Source" Usage
I am interested in using the "Open Source" logo in a project I am doing. I am
creating a clam shell DVD case cover for the Ubuntu distribution. The most
recent iteration can be found at
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=196224#post196224. Is this usage
on a Ubuntu DVD case acceptable? Can I use the "certified" logo instead? Also,
are there any SVG graphics? I'm using a TIF on a SVG image and the resulting
file size is certainly less than ideal. Any feedback would be great. Thanks for
your time.

I think there is a typo in the "free and open source" section. I'm just reading the thumbnail, so it's hard to see, but I think I see the word "chare" instead of "share".
If not, sorry for the interruption. It would likely be worth while once it is in its final stages to have 4 or 5 people proof read it.

A directory containing my work can be found at:
http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~pax
If you have PHP enabled on your web site I would suggest putting this index.php file in that directory:
<?php
$maindir = "." ;
$mydir = opendir($maindir) ;
$exclude = array( "index.php" , "index.html" , "." , ".." ) ;
while($fn = readdir($mydir))
{ if ($fn == $exclude[0] || $fn == $exclude[1] || $fn == $exclude[2] || $fn == $exclude[3]) continue;
echo "<br><a href='$fn'>$fn</a>"; }
closedir($mydir);
?>
You can see what it does on my site. (http://www.tux.com.au/files/)

Done! I like this much better; I can actually read the long file names. The only problem is that they aren't alphabetized. How can I make it so?

Instead of printing out $fn, add it to an array( $arrayname[] = $fn; ), and then use php's built in sorting method (http://us4.php.net/manual/en/function.sort.php). Then just print out the array at the end.

The only problem is that they aren't alphabetized. How can I make it so?
Then what about using this instead:
<?php
function cmp($a, $b) {
return strcmp(strtolower($a), strtolower($b));
}
$maindir = "." ;
$mydir = opendir($maindir) ;
$exclude = array( "index.php" , "index.html" , "." , ".." ) ;
$fileList = array();
while($fn = readdir($mydir))
{ if ($fn == $exclude[0] || $fn == $exclude[1] || $fn == $exclude[2] || $fn == $exclude[3]) continue;
$fileList[] = $fn;
}
usort($fileList, "cmp");
while (list($key, $value) = each($fileList)) {
echo "<br><a href='$value'>$value</a>"; }
closedir($mydir);
?>

m0biu5, I know nothing of PHP and have no idea how to implement what you are talking about. Maybe my younger brother can help me with that.
hazza96, your code woks nicely. Thanks.
I also found this code on the Internet somewhere. It displays the filesize as well as a thumbnail if desired. Just read the comments to see where to place the "#icon" tag to get a thumbnail. This is in http://www.pegasus.rutgers.edu/~pax/index.old2.php. Having the following code be able to alphabetize would be ideal. Otherwise I'll just keep using the second bit of code you posted. it worls well.
<html>
<body>
<?php
// handy humansize function:
// input is number of bytes, output is a "human-readable" filesize st\ring
function humansize($size) {
// Setup some common file size measurements.
$kb = 1024; // Kilobyte
$mb = 1024 * $kb; // Megabyte
$gb = 1024 * $mb; // Gigabyte
$tb = 1024 * $gb; // Terabyte
if($size < $kb) return $size."B";
else if($size < $mb) return round($size/$kb,0)."KB";
else if($size < $gb) return round($size/$mb,0)."MB";
else if($size < $tb) return round($size/$gb,0)."GB";
else return round($size/$tb,2)."TB";
}
// get local directory path
$path= dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME']);
?>
<h3>Files in <?php print $path; ?>:</h3>
<ul>
<?php
$d = dir($path);
$icon = '';
while (false !== ($entry = $d->read())) {
if ( substr($entry, 0, 1)=='.' ) continue;
// get size
if ( substr($entry, 0, 1)=='.' ) continue;
// get size
$size = filesize($path.'/'.$entry);
$humansize = humansize($size);
// find filename extension
$dotpos = strrpos($entry, '.');
// creates the thumbnails
if ($dotpos) {
$ext = substr($entry, $dotpos+1);
if ($ext === 'jpeg' || $ext === 'gif' || $ext === 'pn\g') {
$icon = "<img src='$entry' style='width: 50p\x; height: auto; vertical-align: text-top;' alt='icon' title='$entry' />";
}
}
print "<li><a href='$entry'>$entry</a> ($humansize)</li>\n"; \//place "$icon" in the text to show a thumbnail.

}

Ta dah! I did a google search for "Breezy SVG" and came up with this link (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27941). I don't know if there is any official Breezy yet or if there ever will ever be one, but this particular badger was submitted and is good enough for now.
I'm pretty sure that this is a less than ideal graphic of Breezy for the final product, but is perfect for displaying what I have in my head. I'd like to have Breezy looking to the right or at the observer. This would free up some space to the left of Breezy and would allow me to move Breezy and the orange bar to the left a bit.
Thanks for all the help with the php, folks. The directory is sooOO much nicer to look at.

I agree. I want to put a nice gradient on the background of the whole cover from a darker color on the outter edges to a lighter color in the center. Possibly even from the upper right and lower. Before I do this I need to play with the background logo on the rear cover. The way that background logo is made there is a ring around the darker parts that is the same color as the current background. Download the SVC and check it out for yourself.
Has anyone printed a cover yet? I've printed a few proofs and the colors on my screen are a bit darker than the color that is printing out. I'm wondering if it is my printer, my screen, or the way the SVG is. I think it may be partly due to the regular paper I'm using. I need to grab some heavier, brighter stock. In any event, I'd be interested to know if anyone is using this.
I have gotten in contact with Tobias, the creator of the Breezy currently on the cover, who has asked me to contact him if I need "any kind of support with these graphics." Danke, Tobias.

I just quickly had a look at the thing in Inkscape, and maybe found waht the front might be missing. This is more or less just a mockup, probably needs tweaking. I wanted to introduce the speed advantage of using Linux into the cover. So now the nadger is riding the line, and there's other ones...

I've been busy for spell while taking Calculus IV and Intro. to Computer Programming at Rutgers University and haven't had much time for anything else. However, Friday was my final and over the weekend I finally got around to adding a few features and uploading it all. Here is a thumb of the latest version:
http://www.pegasus.rutgers.edu/~pax/DVD_Cover-2005.07.24-thumb.png
Now after posting I think the DVD logo on the front might be a little larger than it should be. Maybe not.
I think the cover is pretty much in its final form for my taste. At this point any further modifications is probably just a matter of preference. kung.foo has a pretty nice design going on a few posts up. An archive of the files I used in creating this is located at the end of the lilnk below. Enjoy...

I'd put a screenshot on the right and one on the left side of the back cover instead of putting them in columns.
I'm not really keen on the dvd logo.The grey background and the circle might as well be removed.
But the badger is definitely very smart.
For the front,you should emphasize (sorry for the spelling,i'm French and too lazy to look for the proper way to spell it ;-) ) on the fact that it is a free operating system

Also I say ditch the DVD logo and bring back the OSI logo so the case can be used for CDs too.

The work that I put into the files I would consider public domain. However, the image of Breezy was borrowed from another person and the ubunto logos belong to Canonical. I think some of the text was ripped from a Ubuntu CD I have.
So, go ahead and edit, copy or do whatever you like with the files keeping in mind that not everything is mine fo give. Happy hacking!

I took Charlie763's artwork and played with it just a little. I gave the badger some "breezy fur" and changed the edition to "AMD x64" with the "Christmas" font for the lettering. Then I created an image for the DVD itself utilizing the artwork just created. I hope someone besides me finds this useful. If you have an Epson Photo Stylus R200 or compatible, I've included the epson .ecs file to create the cd itself. Otherwise all the files in the .zip are .png's for portablity.

The problem is gimp-print. We currently have version 4.2.7 and version >=4.3 is required for correct cd support. see http://www.linuxprinting.org/pipermail/inkjet-list/2003q4/000579.html
section #7 for details. I'm currently working on trying to put a .deb package together that will solve this problem. Don't have a time frame as I've never done this before. I'll be basing it on guten print as that is the gimp print replacement. I'll post details as soon as I can. Hopefully this will be fairly painless. go to guten-print (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/index.php3) for details.

Why did you take off the open source icon? I really think it would be good to keep it. Other than that change I really like them.Well... After e-mail exchange with charlie763, it appears the logo is not freely usable: OSI asks for signed paper insuring only OSI-compliant software is on CD/DVD. I cannot assure this, so I removed it and I ask everybody to use that logo on himself's responsability.
Remember: sources are in SVG(Z), so if you want, it is very easy to modify the DVD Cover [Inkscape power !] and create your own ones (work is GPL'ed, so feel free to use it as you want)

That Kubuntu cover looks fantastic. Any chance of finding one in English language? Likewise, anyone know of where to find a good Kubuntu label for the disc itself?

The cover is under GPL. So feel free to change it. I will eventually make an english version, but not before ~15. february (you know, exams...).
About CD sticker, there are ones referred here (http://process-of-elimination.net/wiki/Kubuntu_CD_Labels), but only for 5.04. You could even change it, they are even in SVG.

Monday night I went ahead and updated my design. An archive of the full SVG file, 300 dpi resolution PNG cover images, and source files can be found at http://www.pegasus.rutgers.edu/~pax/Ubuntu_DVD_Cover-2005.07.24.zip.
The SVG file was created in Inkscape using layers to keep things organized. Go to "Layer > Layers..." to see what I'm talking about. Changing the lower boarder from the PC version to the Mac version is a matter of changing which layers are visible. You can also make the background nonvisible if you don't want to use a lot of ink.
I enter my work into the public domain. All other items such as the Ubuntu logo, Circle of Friends image, and the text probably fall under some license. I got the text from the CD case Canonical sends out. The rest of the images came from the official artwork wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Official.
Enjoy folks!

Only Official stuff, circle of friends, Ubuntu Logo, and everything.
Made in Inkscape too. Layers to export different versions.
Enjoy.

Hey, programad, the covers look great! I particularly like the faces on the spine.
Everyone should check out what they look like printed: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/DVDCover. I've been putting mine in black cases because that's what I have around, but they look much better in the clear cases.
Here are some ideas I've been having:
Create
a Getting Started Guide to be inserted in the case.
Print additional information on the reverse side of the sheet the cover is printed on so it can be read from the inside of a clear case.
Use a tan or brownish paper and adjust the design accordingly to save on ink.

I just found a little python script for GIMP that will allow one to take an image and project it onto a DVD case. See the thumbnail for the end product and the attached file for the script.
Download the script copy it to "~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins/dvdcoverdisplayer.py"
Then make it executable by typing "chmod +x ~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins/dvdcoverdisplayer.py"

I saw this file on your filespace as well (I think that this is what you meant). Nice work. I like it, though a Kubuntu one would be nice. Maybe I'll edit SVG over weekend to create a Kubuntu one if I get a chance.

Hi. First of all sorry about my English. (Lo siento)
This is my first post and i thought that i should give something to the community. Maybe it's not the right forum, but i saw the requests here.
This topic is old, but i made the Kubuntu covers based on the Ubuntu ones. I'm a programmer, but i just love inkscape so I know that this covers are not that great so any suggestions are accepted. If you like them i'll made the xubuntu, edubuntu, fluxbuntu, ubuntu studio and ubuntu ultimate covers :D

EDIT: removed excess parts of the original - should have quoted instead of replied...
Are you allowed to make it an SVG in Inkscape? I did it successfully, and would be happy to post the link, but I don't know if that's against any rules. Let me know!

I had a play with the Feisty label Gimp file posted here:- http://www.dfreer.org/ubuntu/
I just changed the text layers to read "7.10" & "Gutsy Gibbon", and added the "linux for human beings" strapline below "Ubuntu".
If you don't already have it, the Ubuntu font is also on that link

Here is my attempt. I quickly changed the old Feisty One for Gutsy. I Wish I had a new idea or image other than the same old Circle of Friends from 3 releases ago.
Added the new features to the back of the case, I think that would be a good idea otherwise all the DVD cases are gonna look similar very shortly.
Chose to keep the same light brown color as the last one simply because I prefer it more than the darker color. Besides, just because the wallpaper is dark doesn't mean that the dvd color has to be.

I wanted to showcase more of the new features of Gutsy vs. The same old features listed on the old dvd covers.

I, too, had some free time and made my own cover, but mine sticks with the old design and only adds one screenshot. I will post my results soon!
EDIT: I had to JPG-ize it in order to get it down to a size that would upload. I need to get a server...
EDIT2: Here is a better version (has minimal JPG-ization)
