Hi there. I'm a IT student from Latvia. I'm studying in the Daugavpils University (http://dau.lv) and I'm studying the Computer Sciences first year. I'm really interested in the Ubuntu project. I use and I love Ubuntu and some of my friends does it too. And my OS architecture lector supports all the open source stuff.
Recently we had an official M$ windoze vista presentation (the projector screen was blinking because vista didn't have the appropriate VGA drivers :lolflag: - it was quite funny for some of us :) ). But one fact wasn't funny, because M$ was propagating itself and windoze. Well and the M$ is an official partner of our university...
The main problem is that the majority PC users (students included) are windoze users, and they're paying for something that isn't worth the money or some are using it illegally. I'm worried because they don't know the free Open Source alternative, which is better in many cases. So does the students have to waste money for a OS or some offce programs???
I and my studie-mate decided to make an Ubuntu Linux presentation in our university to explain the Ubuntu Linux advantages and to propagate Linux as such. And Ubuntu is an ideal linux distribution for this aim - because it's very user-friendly. :)
But we don't know how to start with... We need some support, some ideas. So it would be great when somebody would help us with some advice. Because we need to open the mind of our IT society! Please, help us. THANKS! :)

Though I don't have any experience in presenting Ubuntu but there are some ideas i think will work.
I think distributing some of the Ubuntu CD during your presentation will also be good and some 'showcase' about ubuntu application and software that are relevant to your course and to the students will be great.
Organise a 'revive your old pc' campaign and ask the students to take the challenge to install ubuntu on their old PC.
Alongside with your presentation, ask interested parties to sign up in a web forum and start having discussion on what they can do through the forum.
If you can even get some sponsor for your events, you might just be able to add some benefits for them to convert.
Not sure if you have a univ computer store that is run by students. Probably you can speak to them and even have 'certified' hardware parts for sale and support on these parts for Ubuntu.
These are just some ideas. Hope it might help.

For presenting to college students... if you have a lot of CS students, exemplifing the excellent development platform Linux is would be a good thing to do.
Other than that, showing Linux's abilities to play music, watch movies, and do all that other 'important' stuff (organize pictures, check email, chat, surf the web)

Linux vis-a-vis unix has had a strong record and tradition of exellence as a teaching
tool at US universities, given its origination from ATT research labs. Few other
choices have the same educational and commercial credentials. You may be able
to find other good leads to this effect by checking the website for Ivy league
schools in the states, if they allow access to contacts in the computing departments
that route.
