Microsoft patch stops Linux on Xbox 360

Microsoft has quietly released a fix for a security vulnerability that could let Xbox 360 (http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/gamesconsoles/0,139102149,39194393,00.htm) owners run their own applications or operating systems on the console.
The update corrects a problem with a tamper-protection mechanism on the Xbox 360. Hackers (http://news.cnet.co.uk/gamesgear/0,39029682,49258523,00.htm) had discovered a way to break through the shield and run their own software, including operating systems such as Linux, on the games console.
Full details of the security vulnerability were disclosed last week in a posting to two widely read security mailing lists. The flaw was actually discovered in November, demonstrated at a hacker conference in December, and fixed by Microsoft in January, according to the posting by an anonymous hacker.
"Together with a method to inject data into non-privileged memory areas, this vulnerability allows an attacker with physical access to an Xbox 360 to run arbitrary code such as alternative operating systems with full privileges and full hardware access," the anonymous hacker wrote.
Microsoft confirmed the issue on Friday. "Microsoft has worked with the party that reported this issue and has already distributed a fix across our distribution methods, both online and offline," a company representative said in an emailed statement.
The update was pushed out via Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service. It is also available for download on the Xbox Web site, the representative said. However, Microsoft doesn't describe the Xbox update as a security fix. Instead, on its Web site (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/softwareupdates.htm) it lists an "operating system update" for download, without stating what the update does.
The Xbox and other game consoles have always been popular hacker targets. The challenge for hackers is to circumvent protections on the devices to run their own, so-called homebrew code on the device or load another operating system.
A whole market for Xbox cracks grew around the first version of the game console. Add-on chips for the Xbox -- called 'mod chips' -- let consumers play pirated discs and other applications. In addition, some groups claimed they could run Linux on the Xbox.

Wow that is really sad... so if you upgrade something which you own then you're classed as a "hacker"? Ha, they almost made him sound bad :D That really sucks how they've done that, obviously just doing their thing by eliminating the competition.

MS cannot fix that issue.

"Hey guys, let's prevent users from using the hardware they've paid for they way they choose! This is a huge security hole we have to patch immediately!"

i dont think that is even possible. cause the xbox360 is basically just a closed system, its designed only to work with what microsoft wants it to work with, aka games, maybe some other cd's by microsoft, movie DVD's but thats basically it. You cant just boot into the BIOS of an xbox360, or pop in a live cd and boot to linux and wipe or repartition the hard drive

but i dont think it is possible on personal computers, as the bios still lets you boot from bootable cd's or dvd's, you have access to the hard drive, etc etc. Cause once the computer is turned off, and until it actualyl starts booting windows, its all the BIOS... so unless microsoft starts releasing their own BIOS that prevent you from booting live CD's then we are fine.

Yeah MS would get in trouble if they start patching BIOS since:
1. They don't own the BIOS code so have no business being there.
2. It would be clearly anti-competitive.

If only Microsoft could create patches for their desktop operating system that quickly!

If they did that no-one would bother to upgrade. The 360 gives them the advantage that the hardware itself will age and then they will be able to sell an X-Box 720 or whatever.

If they had fixed XP no-one would have bought Vista.

God this is like what sony is doing to the Psp. They stoped all wrighting privileges to the battery and released a mother bored that will not alow u to mod the firmware and the sad thing is the utpoia project (new OS for psp) runs on a Linux kernel witch made me happy but looks like its gonna be canceled. I hate corporate companies they ruin everything -_-

I softmodded my xbox 1 a year ago and to my mind it has enhanced the whole thing and given it a new life. It is LAN wired to my PC so I can play my music via the xbox/ TV with it's 5.1 sound system from the PC music folder and my movie collection (all legal). My game disks are safely stored away as I can FTP the images I ripped over to the HDD which incidently is 80GB not the stock 10GB (others have even larger drives) I can browse the web from it watch DVD's without the dongle and handset. I guess the thought of people not having to pay vast amounts of cash on extras if they could do it with a software hack is whats got their attention.
