OK, newbie here going between SUSE, Mepis, Kanotix and Ubuntu. I'm trying several at the moment.

I've read most of the KDE vs Gnome debate threads on this forum and got the gist of everyone's "side". I agree that Gnome is cleaner looking & faster, but it appears I can do more with KDE without resorting to the command line. To each his own, I assume.

What I can't find is a good KDE --> Gnome conversion reference or vice versa. What programs overlap? How do you do certain functions in either? (Why so many choices in several of the KDE distros?)

Let me explain. One of the threads I read here says that KDE comes with tons of programs by default, and most of them useless. Well.... so does Windows, and there are always better shareware or retail alternatives to "Sound Recorder", Paint" and "Hyperterminal" for instance. Since I'm a newbie, I don't know what those alternatives are, or if I even need them. I don't expect anyone to be able to answer that for me, but I did have one question which should be relatively easy. It's worth a WIKI, IMO.

Can anyone cross reference all the default KDE programs to their default Gnome counterpart, or vice versa?

That way, when I (or others) are trying various distros with the two prominent desktop environments, I'll understand why I don't see certain applications in each one. For example, and I'm not this dumb.... :) What if I came from KDE and tried Gnome for the first time then said "Gee, I better download Kwrite. What are these Gnome people thinking?!". You get the idea.

So does such a document exist? Or would anybody be willing to point me in the right direction? Heck, even something that cross references the basic Windows programs would be good too!

I think you should request that here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=33183).
