hello all.
right, coming from the windows world i know that if i go a little crazy and install a load of apps on my machine, windows often slows down and drags, even following uninstallations - as theres a load of crap left over.
however, im wondering if this is the case in ubuntu world. if i go mad and install loads of stuff and then do complete removals and some additional autocleans, is ubuntu going to suffer or slow down or still have crap lying around?
Regards,
Tom

You will have lots of crap on your hard drive but your system will not slow down. That "crap" is actually the .deb files that you download when you install your applications via the synaptic package manager. At least its useful "crap". :)

It may but, it isn't as bad as windows. The package manager is suppose to prevent that from happening but it can screw up. You might be interested in gobolinux as it avoids that problem.

It shouldn't slow down. Maybe just a tiny little, but no where near as bad as Windows does. That's usually caused by the registry that keeps getting more bloated with the more stuff you install.

I have never reinstalled on either my laptop or my desktop (original installation was made with Hoary). They've been through 2 dist-upgrades and lots of packages. The only problem I've seen is that the package database is getting slower, causing (un)installs to become slower, but not day to day use. I've been very impressed with Ubuntu's stability.

If you're worried about installing/uninstalling programs then I would suggest you use "aptitude" over "apt-get". It's a more cleaner way of removing dependicies:
