Hi,
I'm considering installing Ubuntu as a dual boot onto my xp machine, but my ISP, Zoomtown from Cincinnati Bell, tells me they only support windows. Is there a way to make ubuntu look like windows to the ISP? I would really like to eliminate windows and shift to Linux. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You either have an Internet connection or you don't, your os has nothing to do with that. They are most likely referring to virus protection and or some other silliness they want to install on your computer.
Try the live CD and see if you can connect.

will do. Reason I'm concerned is that I used xandros for awhile on dialup and had to get specific configuration info from my ISP in order for it to work. be back tomorrow and let you know.
Thanks for your help.

If you need any specific help, I would also post your question in the Absolute Beginner Forum here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=73
Questions there are usually answered very quickly. We Ubunteros are a helpful bunch by nature!

Hi there jiminid! I hope everything goes well for you. Yes, on dialup you definitely had to have several settings to set up to get it to connect. Is Zoomtown also dialup, or broadband? If it is broadband, (especially through ethernet) Ubuntu will most likely pick up the internet automatically. In fact, for my DSL, we had to reconfigure for Windows to use it while Ubuntu picked it up automatically on a fresh boot / install.

Time Warner is the cable provider here, and you got cinbell for DSL. I have heard Verizon has the wireless internet here, or is working on getting it... I don't remember....

Anyone in the Delaware/North Columbus area stuck with MidOhio.net can try http://nexgenaccess.com.
They are fairly cheap ($20/month for a 384kbps line) and you just have to be in their coverage area. The only downside is that if it snows a lot or storms, the speed will slow down a lot. Otherwise it has been pretty reliable.
Verizon has about the same coverage as Time Warner, so if you have dialup chances are you cannot get their landline service. They also sell EVDO lines, but they are extremely expensive, starting at $60/month for a 384.
EDIT: Post number 2^9!

Thanks all,
problem I was having was that I didn't turn on my DSL power when installing. So I reinstalled and good ol' ubie found everything, set it up seamlessly and I was good to go.
Thanks again!

Seems Zoomtown upgraded my bandwidth for free and without warning! My max DL just days ago was 310KB/sec. :)
