I triple boot XP, Gentoo and now Ubuntu (or should I say Kbuntu, I just installed KDE).

I am going to lose XP and maybe even Gentoo...why, because with Ubuntu I am utterly amazed.

I have always despised distro fanboys. Endlessly pledging undying loyalty to what amounts to be a a bunch of binary 0s and 1s. I never thought that I would even voice my support for anything other than world peace. And yet here I am. I googled Ubuntu to see what it was all about. What stood out the most was the phrase “It just works”. That was difficult for me to believe about any *nix OS. I went to the web site and trolled the forums and was impressed by how civil it was. I even filled out the form to get a free CD. Ha Ha, yeah, like that would ever happen, I even ordered 10 like they suggested just to spite them. A couple of weeks later, I get this package of CDs. I think to myself, “No #$%^&* way!” Since I had originally thought so bad about Ubuntu I decided the least I could do was give it a shot. I cleared some space and about an easy hour later it's completely installed. The easy install is not was surprised me, many distros have easy installs now. That fact that everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) worked out of the box simply blew me away. I was used to spending countless hours with my other *nix distros just to get anything to work. Even simple things took hours. Not with Ubuntu. Even the PS1 prompt was exactly the way I wanted it. I have enough skills to use any distro I want. For now, I will use Ubuntu, why, because I can spend more time DOING than CONFIGURING. If I want to configure something there is nothing stopping me, after all, this is Linux. But I don't have to...because everything--just works.

Welcome to the land of ubuntu. I'm glad you were able to get it up and running well. It's been workin' solid for me!

Glad we have another Ubuntu convert. I still play with Gentoo but more often than not I'm booting into Ubuntu.

Gentoo is cool but I considered it to be a hobby distro for a hardcore Linux folks. I think Ubuntu is close to being ready for the masses.

I agree totally. Hence the usage of the word "play" in my previous post. ;-)

My sentiments exactly. After years of more configuring then using Linux I came across Ubuntu. What a joy! A distro that just works. Hard core geeks will always look down their noses at distros that don't require a degree in CS to install and get working but for us ordinary folks who want to break away from MS and the tidel wave of virii, spyware, etc, the combination of Ubuntu and debian was something long awaited. Via Ubuntu!

Of course this will not keep me from playing with other distros. That's the fun of Linux and Open Source. The freedom to try other flavors. God! I love Linux! :))

I'm a recent convert too. After getting Photoshop working with Crossover Office I don't need to boot into XP at all now, it's great!

I've previously tried SuSE and Mandrake, Ubuntu wins hands down!
