wow, it seems I, too, have the exact same error now when compiling anything :/ I've tried gcc-3.3.5, gcc-3.4.4 packages and gcc-4.0 packages, same sort of error for both (different paths for gcc-lib though).

Im guessing this is a larger problem.... and im guessing it's a glibc issue. I'm suprised there isn't more uproar about this, or maybe no one compiles anything on ubuntu 64 :P

Yeah, maybe :D
I will try to work on that tomorrow, since now i got ubuntu freshly installed (first time) im installing software from repos, most of that i can find there, but still...
I found some articles about it on the net and some solutions about if the cpp flag is befor gcc and so on. will post if can get around it (i`m working in linux 3 years from now and never seen such an error :D )

well, this is a recent development occuring from one of the updates since the 5.04 amd64 release, because I used to be able to compile stuff, such as doing: make menuconfig for example (which yields the same error). I know there was a recent binutils update, but i dont think there's been a libc update. dunno, can't remember.

My guess is that this is a big libc/gcc screw up by the people packaging ubuntu-amd64 stuff and that it'll be fixed soon... I need to track down an ubuntu mailing list and see if anyone is complaining about this on amd64.

Let me know if You find out something.

rsw
May 28th, 2005, 02:54 PM
ah it was caused by the recent binutils update! There has been a new binutils update put out today (2.15-5ubuntu2.2) which has fixed the problem. *whew*.

Well setting the variable didn`t did a trick for me, i just updated binutils and everything went ok.

Cheers

I need to update the hplip files as it is taking too long to spool prints to the HP printers

Hey everybody

I had the same problem as you guys, and tried some of the hints you mentioned, but none worked...

But after installing build-essential (apt-get install build-essential) everything worked fine :D

Maybe this should have been done from the start, but I'm relative new to linux :P

thanks WhackDK.

I had the same problem and what you did helped for me too.:D

That's the same for C++

the following package are needed: build-essential g++ g++-4.0 gcc libc6-dev libstdc++6-4.0-dev linux-kernel-headers

Just do: sudo apt-get install build-essential

Is there any alternatives if pc not has internet connection ?

I have the same problem... only mine can't be remedied by build-essential... check this out:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (= 2.4-1ubuntu12) but 2.5-0ubuntu6 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Any ideas?

I'd really like to have the new Audacity......

Nevermind... I changed my apt sources to feisty temporarily and just ran the updated files. Worked fine.

Go visit a fella of you with a internet connection and bring your usb key.
Then just download the packages: http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/devel/build-essential

I had this problem, build-essential fixed it for me (I swear that package should really be installed by default!).

Some user won't ever compile anything ... that's why!
