What is the most stable operating system?

What is the "best" operating system-- in terms of hardware efficiency in programs, ease of use, modibility , user interface, and other of the most important factors that go into an OS?

Best OS for multimedia?

There is no best. Different strokes for different folks.

What do you mean by Multi-media? Are you building a mythbox?

Each operating systems optimizes code for different thing so a lot of you questions can't be answered. For ease of use I'd say maybe Mac OS X. For security I'd say openBSD. For hardware efficiency in most cases I'd say linux. For portability I'd say netBSD. For scalability I'd say freeBSD...and tons more that are good in their own domain.

Linux :P

Seriously what are you going for here, if you come to a linux forum you are most certainly going to get a linux bias.

What you need to do is see what is best for YOU, and not what is best in general.
There are many options out there, even microsoft might satisfy your needs in the end.
If you are asking what is the best in general I would say linux, as many linux varients can offer you ease of use, great hardware support, have a decent software library and be stable as a rock.
If you are looking for something more on the multimedia side I would suggest OSX, and to a point windows XP. OSX is great for multimedia, if its one thing I like the best about OSX is its great multimedia capibilities compared to say windows or linux, however both windows and linux can match it with proper tweaking.
security look no farther then BSD, in many ways it is more stable and secure then linux but when it comes to multimedia it is not as good and its not as good with hardware as linux might be...

it all comnes down to what is best for you, if you want to stick to windows stick to windows, XP is not going to die right away with luck and knowhow you can make XP pretty safe and stable.
If you want to try OSX go for it, OSX is not a bad OS in my opinion though macs are high in price
and then there is linux, the advantage that linux has over OSX and windows is its live CD's, the live CDs can allow you to look at linux and see if it would work for you
BSD has a few live distros as well

its your option in the end.

I mean I have heard about how great BeOS was and Haiku OS is going to be and I keep seeing the legal issues Vista have and I wonder do I want to support Microsoft by using it even if the university will put Vista on here for free? Those legal implications seem pretty restrictive.

Best OS for multimedia?I can't give you an answer to your question if I don't understand the question.

What do you mean by multimedia?

Please clarify your question so I can determine where to merge this thread. Unless you are asking something new and unique, if so then you need to let me know how you want the title edited to avoid complications.

Rav, I think he means distros slanted towards pure multimedia software and features, and there are some. I have seen them listed on distrowatch. I can not recall at the moment which ones offered such releases though.

Couldn't agree more

However, OpenSolaris kernel is deemed more stable and hw-efficient than Linux kernel and some application software for windows can be irreplaceable by free Linux alternatives, so it's not that easy.

I would almost agree with Ubuntu Edgy. It is the most easily used for all level of computing skills from beginner to power user.

It is the most adaptable to users and things are way easier for everyone here while affording power of customization.

I cannot say it is the best operating system though as I have not used every other distro ever created. I prefer zenwalk or the slack-based distros however as I find it faster, almost as feature rich as Ubuntu, and very easy to manage.

Others may prefer OSX, Pclinux, Sabayon, Debian, even Windows XP, BSD, etc.

Linux to me is the superior OS. It gives the user the most customization power, and the best of all the world. With Linux, a user can make their machine into a server, desktop, multimedia worksatation, gaming workstation, all at the sametime as compared to many other OSes where the user has to either be a server or desktop PC, etc.

(which can be downloaded here.) (http://linux.startcom.org/?app=15#ML-5.0.5)

I really don't think there is a "best" OS. You have ones like Linux that are very stable, but still lack a lot of proper driver support. Then you have ones like Windows that are less stable but can run nearly any piece of software ever written.

Thus, one must find a balance. When I'm using Linux, I'd probably only ever limit myself to Ubuntu and openSUSE, because they combine the stability of the Linux kernel with the necessary multimedia codecs that commercial applications can bring.
