Recently the power supply went in my home server,
I didnt think too much of it, djust ordered a new one off the internet. (this was a couple of days ago)

Today when the power supply turned up, went to fit it and then noticed that the connection to the motherboard was different and that the old supply had an extra cable with 4 more cables coming out of it.

After a bit of research, found out that the server (Pentium 2, old thing) needs an LPX power supply as oppose to the more modern ATX type that i have purchased.
(for the uninformed: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/power/sup/formLPX-c.html)

I have spent all this afternoon googling round trying to find one of these LPX power supplys in the uk, and so far i have only found one for sale on ebay in america (i cant afford the postage from there).

Does anyone happen to know where I can purchase one?
Or where i am likely to find one of these power supplys?
Or if its even worth buying one and i should buy a newer server?

My next idea is to try and find an old pc at the local dump and tear out the power supply from that, but my local dump isnt exactly local...

Hi there,

Although the LPX form factor is pretty obsolete at this stage, it should still be possible to lay hands on a suitable PSU. The main concern I have is that you used the word "server" in your o/p. Imo, low-profile form factors are not well suited to use as servers, because they often place unreasonable limits on the number of devices you can attach to the motherboard, and tend to be extremely badly ventilated.

To be honest, since you've already gone to the expense of purchasing an ATX PSU (and will only have to fork out again for an LPX one), I would give consideration to switching to an ATX motherboard. Of course, in your specific situation, it might not be that simple ... the ATX form factor might not fit in your chassis ... and the CPU might not have a suitably modern socket on it.

I'm not a UK resident, so I'm afraid I can't offer much help with local availability, but I thought it might be worth mentioning two things:

For what it's worth, I would not really recommend using a second hand PSU.
LPX form factor PCs may react badly to being heavily loaded, or being left on for extended periods (ie being used as servers).

Sorry I can't be more help, but I figured it would be worth adding something before your thread drops too far down the list of recent posts!

Thankyou very much kidders.
I have decided to purchase my friends old pc that he was going to throw out and format that and use it for a server.
(and send the ATX power supply back)

Then if i ever happen to notice another working LPX power supply might just wack it into that old machine and use it for a backup file server.
