I'm finding 64 AMD more work than its worth for this simple chap who wants some multimedia and video editing. Is there any way to revert to 32 bit without creating a whole new partition?

Hey there,

It seems that the 64 bit version is quite buggy (never used it myself), so the general advice for us new guys is to stick to 32bit.

As to your question, I'm not entirely sure. I think the only way for you to go back is to burn a new CD using the i386 ISO. If you have space on your hard disk you could just create a separate partition to store your information in, and then delete it after, both times using Gparted.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but you may want to wait for a second opinion!

Cheers.

The 64bit version is NOT "quite buggy". It runs very well. The only place where it is tougher to set-up and people can have problems is when using proprietory closed-source software like Adobe's Macromedia Flash Player (even then, there are ways to get it to work).

If you are doing multimedia and video editing, I would strongly suggest you try to stay with 64bit, as you will find upwards of 30% performance gain over the 32bit version in these areas.

Are there specific things we can help you with in terms of setting up your 64bit system?

Yes, there are. I want to be able to play the video on Youtube for instance. You are right in saying it is the proprietry software which needs more work. I tried a couple of the suggested ways, as outlined on the forums, to set up flash 32 for firefox using the terminal, but since I am so new to Ubuntu I don't have a good grip on the text stuff. Last time was MS DOS 6!
Another thing is VLC is incredibly crashy and while I can sometimes get a bit of radio out of it it usually crashes when I try to alter the playlist...

I've got a little BenQ Joybook with 512 Ram, 80 gig HDD, totally factory. I have windows XP home as well, which I wish to eventually erase.

Indeed there are. I would like to be able to use encoded dvd with my computer, and have installed all of the stuff with easybuntu but don't know where to go from here. by the number of errors in the terminal I suspect it wasn' totally successful. do I use totem? I can run it again and post the terminal if it would help.

Wow...

To encode a 1 hour Digital 8 video to DVD MPEG format in KINO:

32 bit PCLINUXOS: 90 minutes
64 bit UBUNTU AMD: 63 minutes

30% time savings!!

MP3 rip+encode maxes out around 21x. Was much slower for me in 32 bit.

I'm extremely happy with this performance and it makes 64 bit terrific for me.

If you have problems with flash videos check

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1174435

every info on that page proved usefull for me. Thanks to the author. If you have problems with packages with i386 architecture using some --force can help you solving your problem. I even managed to make 32 bit cedega work on my computer and I can play WoW, Warcraft 3 without any problems in OpenGL mode.

Flash is what youtube uses right? If so all is good with that. In fact the only thing I can't do yet is to get Totem to play encoded region 2 DVDs. The DVD drive is set to play that region, so it is a software thing. I used easy buntu to install the libdvdcss library, so now what do I need to do?
I'm loving this forum. Everyone is so friendly and helpful.
