I have held off from upgrading the kernel over the last two days as I have seen several posts from people who have had problems with it.
So is it safe, or not? have a lot of people had problems, or only a tiny proportion of the masses of people who have upgraded theirs?

My gues is (considdering what the forums are for) that only a small number of people are having problems. As long as you dont get a bleeding edge kernel, and keep your existing kernel incase, I think you should be OK.
Good luck :)

If you're talking about 2.6.11-5, don't it's not stable and it's made for users who want to make it compil and work with their systems. If you don't have experience in making it compile with your system configurations, please don't install it.

Thanks for your replies, I have linux-image-2.6.10-5-386 & linux-image-2.6.10-5-686-smp installed, both work, so I suppose I could upgrade the smp and keep the old 386 in case the upgraded smp doesn't work. If I do so and the smp kernel doesn't work, is there any way to downgrade it?

As far as I know, you should be able to choose the version in synaptic .. just force version. This works with applications, and I don't see why it would be different for the kernel, as long as you have a standby kernel you can boot into.

Hmm. I think I'll try it this weekend, when I have enough time to use partimage to image my partition before try (just in case).

I have just upgraded the kernels, everything went smoothly, and I have since rebooted without any problems.

Very good news to hear, most people are unable to do this procedure, but I am glad to see someone really enjoying this kernel!

You're running on the newest smp kernel? That is good news.

2.6.10-5-686-smp (the latest upgrade) is what I'm running on now.
