for my mother's main computer i would love to have ce on it, but it's a little slower so it's only running xubuntu. can someone tell me what the apps are and how to download them so that she can benefit from some of the major features?

I don't understand your question. Are you requesting opinions about the best application/software for Xubuntu or are you asking 'how to isntall xubuntu?'

Xubuntu can run both gtk and qt applications.
So, it really dosn't matter if you are using Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, you'll be able to use any application as long as your RAM supports it. :)

EDIT:
OH! I get it! Didn't notice this was the Ubutnu Christian Edition forum :)
So you are asking what application an configuration is what makes Ubuntu CE different from a regular Ubuntu.

Let's see...

DansGuardian (http://dansguardian.org/). A web content filter

install by:

sudo aptitude install dansguardian

BibleMemorizer (http://biblememorizer.sourceforge.net/)

GnomeSword (http://gnomesword.sourceforge.net/) Bible Program for GNOME (could be used for other DE as well)

sudo aptitude install gnomesword

Bible Time (http://www.bibletime.info/)
Bible software for KDE

install by

sudo aptitude install bibletime

and among others....

Or you can go to this (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/download.html) page and choose your version (Dapper or Edgy) of Xubuntu and the link there will take to a page with choices as to what you want to install on your mothers machine.
