Spring (formerly known as TA Spring or Total Annihilation: Spring), is a full 3D open source RTS engine originally created by the Swedish Yankspankers, intended to bring the gameplay experience of Total Annihilation into three dimensions.

Works on both Windows and Linux

Download Here (http://spring.clan-sy.com/download.php)

• Ability to handle "large" maps.
• Fully 3D camera view, allowing for complete freedom of movement.

Finally a RTS with lots of action.
First I have to try it though.
Looks awesome.
Thanks for informing me :) .
Oh, and this could be moved to the gaming and leisure section of the forum.

They say this game is based on Total Annihilation.

"in it's basis, to be able to run the content of the game Total Annihilation and deliver a similar, but improved, gaming experience"

I hope this doesn't mean that you need that Total Annihilation game.
Since it's opensource I guess not.
I hope my ATI Radeon 9600 can handle this game. :)
Thanks for the reps. A.I.

Total Annihilation is not needed to play TA Spring :)

This game seems to work very well on my computer. Did take me quite a while to figure out that the robot you start out with is actually a builder!

Same here when I tried the game first time. But I must say it's one of the better Opensource game out there.

Argh, I can't seem to install Spring from the repository, and with Wine, it's not working out too well.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
spring: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4-1) but 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.4 is to be installed
Depends: libfreetype6 (>= 2.2) but 2.1.10-1ubuntu2.2 is to be installed
Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-12) but 1:4.0.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed
Depends: libglew1 (>= 1.3.4) but 1.3.1-1ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: libsdl1.2debian (>= 1.2.10-1) but 1.2.9-0.0ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-12) but 4.0.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Specifically, I want to play this mod, but I can't seem to load it when it was first installed, using spring-setup to select the outdated mod didn't work either, as it gave me an error about syncing, or something along those lines.

I tried spring under windows a while back, and it's a really great looking game.. i love rts, and this one seems to be the most "acceptable" in terms of gfx and mulitplayer (both very important for me).

I'm running edgy and couldn't get it to work via apt-get installs, i tried the gwos.org howto as well as the one on the spring-page (which has a repository specific for edgy)... never mind, I wanted a newer version anyways.

so i'm now compiling the svn version, following this howto: http://spring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6492

my question is: how well does the mulitplayer part work under linux? this is actually why I want the game. I've read only linux-linux clients can play against each other... i've found several lobbies, but I'm not sure which way to go.. any hints?

and: is it worth the trouble or is nobody playing it online (under linux) right now?

I, too, could not get this to install correctly, told me the package could not be located. I'm 80% sure I've got my sources.list file correctly configured, so hopefully that's not the issue.

That said, this truly is an excellent game. I've played it on Windows extensively.

I hate to revive long dead threads, but i'm pretty sure I found a solution to the problem with spring not being able to install through the package manager, or at least from my end.

All i did was edit the PPAspring source so it was set to source. install the 4 packages that were allowed and all their dependencies, then switch it back to binary and install the other 9.

again, sorry for exhuming this thread.

Something which should send a shiver up the spines of the established game development business

Wasn't TA the product of the established game development business?
