View Full Version : How easy is Vista to install?

I was reading about difficulties users have upgrading from XP to Vista if they have a FAT32 Windows installation. Apparently this creates headaches that can only be fixed by "dropping to the command line." (Now where have I heard that before?) Just wondering if this has affected anyone here.

Don't know if it does fix the fat32 prob.
But i found this interesting,

Gave it a go myself and it does work.

No, I used the final beta and the previous release and installation was just a few clicks, with the updates even Fn keys worked, funny as edgy beta was nerly the same with latest updates Fn start to work.
I would love to see this fat32 installation issue, could make my day.

installing vista gets easier after the 20th time. but the pain of crippling so many new boxes just gets worse and worse :(

Poor guy that really seemed to be a good first expression about vista after coughing up that 100 USD for the OS and searching a capable PC.

can I ask why anyone would still want to use fat32 for their windows vista and or xp install??

I mean if I got a notebook and it was fat32 I would of reformatted to nfts and then re-installed.

to the op, its very easy...

If it were a sharing issue with another Linux flavor I could see using FAT32 for XP/Vista; NTFS support in the Linux kernel isn't what it should be, and setting it up for read/write compatibility is a daunting task for many. For all that FAT32 is a lousy filesystem, it's at least mostly compatible with other OS's out there, something that cannot be said for NTFS. (I have a 200GB shared drive in my box that's FAT32 for precisely this reason.)

It seems this situation is most likely to affect users who purchased a notebook with Windows XP pre-installed, as some manufacturers/vendors installed on FAT32. Even so, it's amazing that Microsoft hadn't considered this possibility.

I use FAT32 on Windows XP because it is much faster than NTFS and I have compatibility with GNU/Linux. Not too sure about Windows Vista though.

Well yes you would. What would you do in case you do not know what a filesystem is ?
Probably use it because it works and when you have toms of files and everything well set up then comes vista.
