I'm moving from Mac to Linux (at least at work) and I'm looking for some replacements for my favorite Mac apps.
First is Quicksilver. I know there is Katapult, but I was wondering if there was anything more robust.
The second is Yojimbo, a personal 'junk drawer' app.

I'm used to using Ubuntu and Debian in a server role, this is the first time it's been my desktop in several years. Thanks for any suggestions.

What are the features of the apps you use?

I'm moving this to the Apple subforum, because there's a high probability they'll know what you're talking about.

you can launch applications on gnome (and i think kde), by pressing alt+f2 and then typeing the start of the name.

other wise there is the deskbar (http://raphael.slinckx.net/deskbar/) applet. that lets you type the names of applications and files, search the web, and lots of other things.

wikipedia's quicksilver page suggests gnome-launch-box (http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gnome-launch-box), but from the site it looks like it is not finished yet.

for your personal junk draw, what exactly do you want to store in it? for storing bits of text and urls tomboy is very good. it is like sticky notes in mac os, but it lets you link between them in a wiki sort of style.

This suggestion would be a huge change for you, because it would mean changing Window Managers. AfterStep (http://www.afterstep.org/)is a Window Manager based on NeXT's user interface, it has drawers and many of the some of the features that QuickSilver has. I've have it on good authority from a Windows guru I know that "NeXT was the most beautiful looking operating system I've ever seen.". There is a Wikipedia article on AfterStep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AfterStep) as well.

Its just a suggestion, please look carefully before you leap!

Well, there's also Window Maker, which is also a NeXT lookalike apparantly.

Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.I"m not sure about this but I believe that AfterSTep will run on top of Enlightenment.

Read Artists Guide to the LInux Desktop (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/3786). I think its a little dated but the underlying information and concepts are still valid. They specifically mention AfterStep along withe Gnome & KDE and explain all about WindowManager and Desktop envinronments on Linux.

I think its is what you are intested in since QuickSllver adds many thinsg to the Mac OS X desktop, so it comes in the category of a desktop enhancement.

That article is quiite good! I'm learning alot myself!

Ciao for now
