hi all, i'm quite a newb at installing linux. however have managed to install x/ubuntu on an old system. p3 900mhz, 112MB ram...

anyway i'd like to ask what's the responsiveness of ubuntu like. how does it compare to xp? i'd dearly like to how apps startup on ubuntu like, as my current xp setup allows *almost* instantaneous startups. (who the hell need themes and all that nonsense!?) i've is a system that's spyware, viruses free and not bogged down by unnecessary services. m$ applications like explorer, excel, word starts up v. fast.

linux really looks much better than m$, esp vi$t@... i'd tried ubuntu->xubuntu->damn small->puppy. ubuntu is just lacking behind puppy in terms of its responsiveness and out-of-box support for my wireless card.

gonna take the plunge with linux if it's comparatively responsive to xp (i'm the VERY impatient type... :lolflag: ) , or i'm looking to zenwalk/arch/gentoo :)

xubuntu or one of the lighter buntu's(flux, ice etc.) should at least match xp on that machine. although, i'll be surprised if they are that slow.

install the server version of ubuntu then install the graphical part and any extras you want. this ensures you don't get a lot of stuff you won't use.

Remember: XP is a 5 year-old operating system. The latest Xubuntu is only a couple of months old. Xubuntu probably won't be as fast as XP on a low-end system like yours (unless you're running anti-virus and anti-spyware on the XP), but even so you'll probably see the improvement in multi-tasking and multi-threading.

Ive got Ubuntu on a duron 800 that had to be dulled down to 700 (the ram I found was only 100Mhz) - but I do have 3 sticks of 128Mb - and the system seems to run faster than me p3.1Ghz which has 133MHz 128*3 with XP on it.

The gui itself seems to run faster, the Load time for most apps is about the same except for Firefox which is faster on XP - yet on the XP machine I have CorelDraw, which is comparably a finished version of Inkscape , and inkscape runs ALOT slower - (this I think can be attributed to Inkscape being unfinished and the fact that native data is XML)(I am about to try out XaraLX) Gimp seems to run about the same on both machines except that Ubuntu seems tobe able to access the server (where my files are kept) a bit faster, actually files on the whole just seem to open faster. Openoffice is bit slower on the Duron.

Oh - I don't have anti virus, spyware software on the XP machine (I did have Norton on it to do a check after being connected to the net for 5years and the computer slowed to a halt - once I found all the viruses I deleted norton.)
