Version: Ubuntu 8.04 (all)
Name: x2Gen 19" Widescreen Monitor
Model: MW19R
Problem: According to a few posts, this monitor has a mistake in its table. It does not work at the native resolution of 1440x900 at anything other than 60hz refresh rate. Playing with xorg.conf will get it work with ONLY the nvidia drivers installed, however not correctly. (GDM (Blank until inside gnome), Videos (improperly scaled to 1024x768), Games (same as videos), anything requiring 3d acceleration will function improperly)
What's needed: Some sort of force resolution/refresh rate utility for both gnome and GDM =)
Windows has the same problem, until you change the refresh rate to 60hz, then it works perfectly fine.

1)Type Of Hardware: Laptop
2)Hardware Maker: Asus
3)Hardware Model: M50VM-A1 (probably -B1 as well because the hardware is identical except for the CPU speed)
4)Known Issue: Ubuntu i386 doesn't even install, x64 does BUT...
NO Compatibility (nothing works) for the following:
-Network Controller: Realtek, unknown model number
-Wifi Card: Some sources say Atheros AR928X, Vista identifies it as Intel 3945ABG. There is a sticker on the card itself that says Atheros, and the Vista drivers on the CD that Asus packaged with the computer lists itself as Atheros. (I'm inclined to believe that it's an Atheros AR928X)
-Sound: I believe it's Realtek integrated, but I'm not sure.
-Fingerprint Scanner: Unknown
-Webcam: Asus, unknown model
VERY LIMITED support for:
-Keyboard: Standard US key layout works, No hotkeys (somewhat expected)
-Touchpad/Mouse Buttons: "Media" and backlight functions are NOT available. The model of this touchpad is not known. Standard Mouse functions are available.
-Video: Nvidia 9600M GS... Standard drivers seem to work, but no advanced functions (higher than 800X600 resolutions) are available. No Desktop effects can be enabled, etc. (Video has never worked out of the box for me in Ubuntu).
Completely Working:
-Basic power functions (And that's IT!)
Summary: Asus M50VM-A1 (and -B1) do NOT come close to working out of the box. Without network support, nothing can be forced to work either.
Praying for: 8.10 to fix these problems (or at least the network issues!!)
UPDATE: The standard linux kernel that comes with 8.10 alpha 3 (I don't know the version number... 2.6.24?) fixes the wired network problem. However, installing a kernel update to the next version (2.6.25?) breaks it again.

Problem :- Ubuntu or any Linux distro doesn't detects it accurately... i mean they show it but can't print.. the cure to this solution is download a 10 MB software from HP which then downloads more software when run. The print quality after running all these softwares is not that good!!

Audio playback and volume control work as expected.
This is with the current 386 Ubuntu Studio with
all the install items selected.
Some other distros show the Audigy 2 inputs but Ubuntu Studio is the
only distro that seems to run xlinrad at 96000 capture rate.
The same 386 Studio and xlinrad work perfectly on an Intel
dg33bu motherboard at 96000 and 16 or 24 bits.

I have loaded Ubuntu 8.04 on my Biostar TF8200 A2+, also Mint and a few others trying to get it to work correctly. Sabayon Linux works the best on this motherboard. Ubuntu and Mint share the same video problem, including Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6. If you load the proprietary drivers as prompted by the little pop-up icon you will trash the system, requiring a reload. It screws up X so that the screen is just bands of colors. If you load the patch directly from nVidia as directed by nVidia's instructions, you will also trash the video. If you load the patch directly from nVidia but using the instructions found in the forum (See: http://tinyurl.com/5yf56h), the graphics works perfectly until the first update from Ubuntu when the video will again be trashed. I gave up and loaded Sabayon which handles the video and almost everything else perfectly. I say almost because Sabayon and EVERY Linux distribution, including Ubuntu, fail to properaly handle the ALC888S audio with the nVidia chipset as implemented on the Biostar TF8200 A2+. The result with every distribution is audio with scratchy noises and reverberation. I had to disable the on board ALC888S and install a sound card.

Does this server have integrated (onboard) graphics? It also (if it does not have onboard graphics) may require proprietary graphics for best performance (that is still an issue iwth some ATI/nV/Intel graphics chipsets).

4)Known Issue - won't boot, can't install
This model won't work with kernel versions less than 2.6.25, Hardy uses 2.6.24, in Intrepid it should be 2.6.27 so Intrepid should run fine. There could be a way to start with custom boot options or messing with RAID, but i haven't tried that.

I seem to be in an infinite loop once I upgraded to 8.10, can't get the video to display.
"Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself."
Click OK and get "What would you like to do?" choices are: 1)run in low graphics mode (which doesn't work when I select it, won't boot) 2) reconfigure graphics (which also does not work, as it just flashes the screen and wipes out my selection) and 3)Use your backed up configuration (result is same as 2 above).
My gawd, how tough is it to get a silly video card to work on a system that previously ran flawlessly?????
So the machine won't boot. Can't restart, as it sometimes instructs me to do. Only hard reboot works, after which the machine either hangs or throws me back into the infinite loop.

ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe (likely also applies to all other Intel 875P/ICH5R chipset-based motherboards with onboard Intel PRO/1000CT gigabit Ethernet) - due to a known quirk with the e1000g module (also effects the e1000 module in the Ubuntu 2.6.27-7-generic kernel used in 8.10), the onboard Intel gigabit Ethernet adapter must be disabled during installation or operation with Intrepid Ibex (this bug is *not* present in Hardy Heron; therefore, I must recommend that Hardy Heron users with this motherboard, or any motherboard with onboard Intel gigabit Ethernet to avoid upgrading to Intrepid Ibex (when clean-installing Intrepid Ibex, remember to turn the onboard Ethernet off).
However, I can also report that the freshly-minted (just today, in fact) Creative X-Fi Linux driver *does* work in Intrepid Ibex (in fact, I'm using it), so the X-Fi (all variants except XtremeAudio) can be removed from the Hardware Incompatibility List for Intrepid Ibex.

There are new drivers for this series of card (literally new; dated today), that work with at least 8.10 32-bit; I'm using them myself.
Download them from http://support.creative.com. (They are a 32/64-bit unified driver set.)

This is part of a known issue with all versions of the Intel gigabit Ethernet controller (especially onboard gigabit); however, it *only* affects Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex; 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is not affected. It's a kernel module-level bug that affects the 2.6.27 series of kernels with varying degrees of severity; unfortunately, Intrepid Ibex got hit the hardest, as no version of any Intel gigabit adapter or controller (either integrated or card-based) is usable. Your options are really threefold:
1. Disable/remove your Intel gigabit Ethernet and replace it with another Ethernet adapter. (In my case, I went with a 3Com 3C905-TX.)
2. If running Hardy Heron, avoid upgrading to Intrepid Ibex.
3. If an upgrade is in the cards, consider another distribution (such as openSuSE 11.0/11.1, which has patched their kernel against the issues I spoke of).

The modem worked fine until I upgraded to Intrepid. It doesn't work at all with new kernel 2.6.27. I can neither see USB devices with "lsusb" (it hangs), nor navigate to /dev/bus/usb folder (Nautilus hangs).
The only solution I have found so far is to boot the kernel from Hardy (2.6.24).

Hello
Recently I've acquired an Asus X50GL/F5GL. I tried to install ubuntu 8.10 but it tries to start running and stop in the middle of the live-session(leaving the screen in black). I tried to install ubuntu 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04. Now i'm running with 8,04 but I had to install it for 4 times and I did it with the dvd version at the end(it always fails saying that it couldn't read some blocks).
When I had it installed I updated and it stop running. So I put the ubuntu cd and I ran it in text-mode and put the option "recover X". After that it runs another time.
The main problem is that it doesn't recognise the wifi, neither the graphical chipset, nor the sound-card. It happens in all the distributions I tried(how ubuntu doesn't run I tried to install debian(sarge, etch...), knoppix, fedora, mandriva and centOS(all of them in the latest versions excepting knoppix that was the ver 5.3.1). Some of them like knoppix and debian broke when try to install the dvd driver(The same happens when I try to test the laptop with Hiren's boot, I can't do anything because none of the drivers included is able to manage the dvd device).
I sent the automatic Test of Hardware included in ubuntu 8.04, but I preffer to explain here what happens, because I suposse I will not be the unic with this problem(But if you know that somebody installed ubuntu 8.10 in a laptop like this , please, tell me and I will go fast to change it to the store(but I tested the memory, the hard disc(with two programs) and I did some global test with sisoft Sandra and it seems to run ok).
