I first found Ubuntu in Hoary, I hated it, but I saw the community's strength and decided to come back later.

Hello, I'm Kevin. I moved to the area about 3.5 years ago for college (Tech) and started looking into Linux after my freshman year.

I jumped from distro to distro for a while and finally came to Ubuntu last June. Started with Dapper, then moved up to Edgy when I saw the awesome of Beryl.

I dual boot with XP and Edgy with a shared /home partition. I will be installing Vista on a small SATA drive that I fixed so that I can become familiar with it for my presumed new IT based career direction.

I live just off of Georgia Techs campus in Homepark.

We moved next door, and while we were up on the roof (totally not trying to extend Techs wireless cloud :-$ ) we found that the reason my ceiling always leaked was that there wasn't a real roof on it ](*,)

Using ubuntu since hoary, have XP on dual boot with edgy, and just installed edgy again on a partition and am upgrading it to feisty so I'll have XP, edgy, and feisty.

I really like fluxbox and icewm.

I'm active in Unreal Tournament as a clan leader, server admin, and forum admin, and script weapons for our Black Legion server. We have a scripting team at the Black Legion and are currently working on bringing vehicles to UT (unlike Qjets, we're working on real vehicles) We have a cool flying mod on our server already made by a gifted individual named Henry House that is really a lot of fun.

And since then I have seen Linux grow in support and ease of use. And I laugh when they say Ubuntu is to hard, or not ready for the desktop (Though iLife type apps are not availible yet. My name is Adam and I'm located in Calhoun, GA, just North of Rome.

Linux user since 2004. I've tried nearly everything.
Fedora Core of various versions, Slackware, Debian sarge, SuSe, Mepis. I switched to Ubuntu after Mepis went into testing for 6.5. I decided I liked Gnome, so I jumped to Ubuntu 6.10.

Closest thing to a user group near me is the Linux class at Dalton State. Meets every Tuesday from 5:30-8:30.
It uses Fedora Core 5.

I'll try to jump into IRC in the Georgia channel. Even though it's not Sunday...doesn't mean the chat can't be used, right?

Nice to know there are other Ubuntu users in Georgia! :)

I've been an Ubuntu user since pre-release 4.10 (Warty) days. Before that, just about any distro that I could successfully install<g>, mainly Red Hat, then Fedora.

Was living in the Los Angeles area from 1986 but moved back to my home state of Georgia in late 2005. Currently resident in Woodstock.

I'm impressed with the Feisty Beta, BTW. After a clean install this past weekend, did my first "major" upgrade (kernel, nvidia driver, etc.) last night with fear & trembling as these have tended to break X in the past. Rebooted, saw the nVidia splash, logged in, no problems. Good job!

I started with Hoary 5.04, so that's right at two years right? Before that I had only dabbled with some live CD's (Knoppix). Since then I've progressed to building an Arch system, then come back to Ubuntu primarily running XFCE, but playing with IceWM here recently.

I'm addicted to tweaking, 6.10 works so well (for me) I tried convincing myself that I'm not upgrading to 7.04, but deep down I know I won't be able to resist.......

Hi, I'm Josh down in Southwest GA. I've used various versions of Linux over the past 9 years, though I used Mandriva consistently. I've been disappointed by their latest releases and tried Ubuntu 6.1 I love it. I am finishing off a degree in IT, right now. For years I've told my friends, family, acquaintances about Linux and have been able to "convert" them. I've given out several of the Live CDs for others to try/install. I noticed that there is a distribution project proposed. How would that work? I can continue to burn and hand out cds here. Also, with the Library project, what would that entail? I could easily give the local library an Ubuntu book; a friend is a librarian there. Just let me know and be patient with me while I get my bearings here.

I've been messing around with Linux for about 10 years. Tried every distro I could find/buy/download. I knew this was the way to go and I really wanted it to be perfect...but what is. My first distro was Caldera 2.2, I think, and that was fun to play with. Tried Ubuntu several times since the beginning and have given a gazillion disks away. I was running between Suse 10.0 and Fedora Core 6 with pretty good luck but, when I loaded up Edgy 6.10 I found a keeper. It just worked and I have been using it exclusively since then. I am still dual-booting with XP because my kids won't let it go...but every time I show them something else they can do on Linux...including Beryl...they get closer. Maybe someday soon we can reclaim our PC and finally dump XP and MS. (Fingers crossed).

I'm Tyler from Georgia. I started using Linux when I downloaded Red Hat out of boredom. I didn't like it. Then my Windows started acting up, so I installed Ubuntu. I liked it a lot. I got a Dell Inspiron 2200 and got sick of the Windows Applications. I switched to Ubuntu, switched back to Windows. I did this about 10 times and now I am using Ubuntu again. The main reason I switched back to Windows was because my USB audio mixer did not work with Ubuntu, and I need that to record songs. I am also a musician btw. It now works in Fiesty. I almost switched back to Windows because Ubuntu was acting slow. I did a tweak to the filesystem and I am blazing. I love Ubuntu.

Returning Linux user -- more off than on for past ~10 years.

Started w/ RHAT with an X I can't remember, then tried fvwm. Played with SuSE, Slackware, Mandrake. Discovered live CD/DVD distros (Knoppix, Ubuntu). Recently installed: Debian 4.0, Ubuntu 7.04, Ubuntu Christian Edition 3.1 and may have talked my dad into getting a Dell laptop w/ Ubuntu pre-installed.

Non-Linux PC: Started w/ DOS 3.x --> DOS5/WIN31 --> DOS6.22/WIN311 --> Win98se --> XP.
Mac: 6.0.8, OS X.

Current aspirations: Ubuntu CE for family use on PC in conjunction with Mac OS X. Ubuntu Desktop for gen. usage and Debian for playing around with.

Multi-boot w/ XP is a challenge: FDISK /MBR is my best friend right now. Learning to make transition from older Linux loaders (LILO) / file locations (/usr/bin/X11) / device structures (/dev/hda1 --> /mnt) to new stuff like GRUB, Xorg, /dev/sda1 --> /media.

4yr BS technical (not IT), accidental computer hobbyist, parental control administrator.

I couldn't figure out how to log into the LiveCD so fortunately my noob self didn't have to deal with a Gentoo installation. My interest with Linux was the cause of my being fed up with Windows 98. I had used it for 6 years. In February of 2006, I got a new system so I decided I'd install Ubuntu some day. Starting with a few crap installs in March, I finally got the hang of Linux and started using it for on and off ever since. Ubuntu Linux has been my primary OS since December 2006.

well, i said "from the beginning" but thats not true. but it has definately been more than 2 years.

basically, the first time i heard about linux was in 97 or 98. but i only gave it a real proper try in 1999, and that was first with redhat, but i quickly gave up on the hat and moved to mandrake. stuck with mandrake all the way until ubuntu was released.

now i bet you thought it was at this point i switched to ubuntu. WRONG! i actually tried ubuntu for like a day or two then moved over to gentoo. played with gentoo for most of my college years (2003 -> 2005) and in the middle of 2005 i gave ubuntu a proper chance. since then, its been ubuntu all the way.

with the recent struggles ive been having with my laptop, i might try opensuse next, but for the meantime, it looks like its gonna be ubuntu all the way :P

I was also using Fedora 7 for a quick jaunt, I used Linspire for a while before I switched to Ubuntu, and for one comedic month I used Fedora Core 1. Anyways, I'm loving this open source stuff and I've been doing a bit of an experiment with open source production software (Cinelerra, Kino, Blender...) . I even wrote my first real perl script today. I was pretty psyched :D

I've been using Ubuntu for about a week or so.

I have it loaded as a dual boot on a Dell laptop. Everything worked first time!

I found another Dell desktop in the trash, Pentium II, 256mb, 4 gig. Loaded it with Ubuntu 7.04, but it was too slow.

I just got done loading it with Xubuntu 7.04 and works pretty good. I posting from it right now!

Pretty good, free hardware and free software.

Xubuntu is pretty cool, even has some cool effects for the desktop under settings>settings manager>window manger tweaks>compositor.

If you have two windows open on your desk, you can make the one behind be translucent
and the one on top will have shadows so it looks like it's floating. Wish they had this in the reg Ubuntu.

Hi, I'm Bill. My first computer was an 8088 running DOS. When I first started using Windows, I was lost. Decades later, I got worried about Windows security and started thinking about Linux. This was around September of 06.

Puppy 1 was appealing. It was supposed to run from within Windows. It didn't. I couldn't get it to run on anyting. I got a disk with Knoppix and finally got it to run but I never played with it much. I probably have over half a dozen distros and some aren't friendly to new users.

Finally, someone gave me Ubuntu. The modem issues kept me from using it for a long time but finally I got an external modem and things picked up. I assembled a computer based on Tom's Hardware Guide's budget system. I'm happy with it and it has Ubuntu 7.04 and also PCLinuxOS 2007 on it.

I have been a steam plant operator for over 20 years. The plant has four high pressure steam boilers that are older than I am. They were built around the 1930's.

Okay, I admit it. Hoping for a better Debian-based desktop, I installed the very first release of Ubuntu on a second hard drive. I booted it up a few of times just to surf the net using Firefox. GNOME is a neat environment, but it's not my first choice. Most of the time I'd wind up playing yahtzee (now "gtali") after logging-in.

After the release of Kubuntu, I came back with high hopes and the Ubuntu community has met my every expectation. I have an nVidia graphics card and it's nice to find help I need to upgrade on these forums [thanks to Alberto Milone] and keep playing 3-D games. I am using LTS and have installed hundreds of packages in the Universe without a hitch. While I have been using Linux at home for several years now, Ubuntu is the distribution that has provided me with the best all-round user experience.

I may have done my introduction before, but just wanted to say Hi (again). I have lived in Marietta and Woodstock, but now am closer to Lake Lanier. Meeting some other members would be cool. I saw a thread about a pizza joint. We should do something like that, maybe downtown somewhere.
I have only used Ubuntu less than a year. I was searching on the 'flip-3D' feature of Vista around September of 2006, and found some clips of Compiz/Beryl, and was totally blown away. At the time, I was using SuSE as my primary OS, and liked it ok, but quickly moved over to Dapper. :KS
I'd never, never, ever go back to MS. Like another member, I had a policy for a while of no Intel, no Microsoft in my house, but my wife used to use Windows. I have finally gotten her out of the 20th century, but do have a couple P4 machines.
To the electronic mechanic at Robins, someone should circulate a memo there indicating that disposing of laptops, monitors, etc. in the trash is an environmental hazard, as well as being against the geek credo of never throwing any hardware away.

I use Ubuntu Studio (Feisty Fawn and now testing Gusty Gibbon) . My purpose for getting involved with Ubuntu was for my musical needs.

Not only is Ubuntu Studio good and getting better, I find that I can use it in my daily business. I needed Windoze for my proprietary music software. My windoze XP computer crashed again last week and this is the 3rd time it went down. I have had enough. Each time I had to rebuild it. Vista is no good to me. My software is not compatible and it would cost me another $2k to upgrade in addition to specialized hardware costs. My music audio and MIDI can be intensive and Windoze and the NTFS can't take it. I have had enough.

I have never crashed Ubuntu. Now I have crashed Ardour and that was the old version. I am testing the new version now.

I love my Mepis Linux (Ubuntu derivative) It just never goes down. I use it for my daily operations and it is simply great! No viruses, spy ware, or the need for any support utilities that cost big money.

I have completely switched to Ubuntu for my business needs (Mail, etc) and I do not think that I will look back.

Mike here, from Augusta. I see there are a lot of Techies out there, so I'll just say I recently graduated from a school whose football team was worth a damn.

Anyways, My first computer ran Windows 3.1 and I've been at it ever since. I first played with linux years ago but I've really gotten in to it within the last two years. I've at least played with most everything you'll see on the front page of distrowatch and I'm actually running Linux Mint as my primary OS now (it's a jacked up Ubuntu, pretty much).

I am quite happy that I have recently switched my parents' computer to Ubuntu, as well as one of the friends of the family, with no complaints. So now there are at least 3 Ubuntu desktops, 1 Ubuntu laptop/tablet and linux router (thank you linksys!) happily purring in the house. So I encourage everyone to go spread the word!

My name is Paul, and I've been using Ubuntu on my desktop for about a year. I started with 6.10 (Edgy) and have kept up with the upgrades, so I'm currently running 7.10 (Gutsy).

Last night I finally installed Gutsy on my laptop as well (dual-boot configuration with Windows XP). It wasn't without a couple challenges, but I got it working. I wish I didn't have to keep Windows around, but I think I'll need it at tax time: I don't think I can get TurboTax or TaxCut to run under Wine, and I'm not comfortable using the web-based versions.

I live in the Midtown West area of Atlanta. I hope to meet a few of you at an upcoming face-to-face meeting or at ALE (when I'm able to attend).

I got in for ubuntu once i started seeing the enclosure of crap-cripple-ware and malformed licenses around vista, i decided it was time to join up with the resistance. decentralized modes of human activity are often the most productive and least demonstrably violent to people and ideas. tried it a few years ago, but it wasn't user friendly enough and i wasn't ready to backtrack my way through what worked to find out how to fix what didn't. now i have more time, and linux has undergone massive changes. big partytime in processorville, all the folks are coming in over the north and south bridge from as far away as harddrive-town, where the great mass of the warehouses are, piled in for the great parade down the VGA-out Blvd., singing the praises of ubuntu.

i am such a malignant headcase sometimes. hope it was fun!

more pragmatically, i'm running a thinkpad z60m, and i'm picking up a new dual core desktop after new line comes around to drop mid-range prices.

During the first time i ever downloaded Ubuntu Image and started the Live CD i new that this is what i'll be using in this life as an OS, the flexibility and the open abilities.

From my experience, i see linux is quite risky in case of the flexibility provided, ... ok thats enough, man im forgetting this is introduction post :confused: ??

I am from Woodstock and have used Linux since...well before 'X' was included. :) The furthest back I can recall was some version of Slackware and Red Hat 2.x ('95-'96?). I have always been partial to *nix since the SunOS days ('93).

My current Ubuntu boxes are 6.06.2 LTS and 7.10 on my MacbookPro with VMWare Fusion.

I am also a huge UT2004 fan and still play often. UT2004 was one game that supported Linux out of the box. I wish more did. I now split my time between TF2 and UT.

I have been testing and blowing up linux boxes for about 9 years. I am addicted to alpha-testing the new Ubuntu releases and other open-source applications. I am an author and speaker on security, linux-adoption and such things. I had a session at OuterZ0ne4 ths year and have done several talks at SecureWorldExpo in the last couple of months, since our book came out. I live in Conyers at the moment and teach beginning Linux and server hardening classes at ITT Tech in Duluth.
I fell in love with Hoary and proceeded to make a pest of myself, giving away live-disks to Windows users. :) I have posted a few things on the locoGA area, and have mostly been wandering the periphery of the "Unanswered Posts" team on the forum and asking programming questions. I started with Mandriva and SUSE but they didn't click with me. I found Ubuntu (Dapper Drake) and liked the totally free aspect, and loved the community.(Mandrive & SUSE were not "free" :( ) I stayed with Dapper for 6 months and accumulated some knowledge (and some beans), but had to go back to Windoze for work. I came back with the release of Gutsy 7.10 and am now running Hardy 8.04 64-bit. I am starting over, trying to relearn the knowledge I have forgotten. The community has expanded along with the forums, but I see the same people are still here helping us newbies. This is THE place to be if you want a computing experience and not stuff spoon-fed to you by M$. All three :) machines now run Ubuntu.

Greetings to you all. I first saw Fiesty Fawn and got excited. I think Linux is the future of computing, Microsoft is shaking in it's boots and praying that people never see Linux. I have been trying to work with Ubuntu for a while now, but I just don't understand anything. Everyone uses technical terms and abbreviations, so I am always lost. I'm not a computer guy.
