What's the best option for a program that will detect and tell me what hardware I'm running?
My particular concern is my built in wireless, I need to get a list of chipsets and so on to check for compatibility problems upon installing Linux. Open Source would be best, but if there isn't an open source program that does it, just give me the next best thing.

Sysinfo. It's in the repos. Access through Applications>SystemTools after install.
EDIT: I just noticed this is in the "Windows Discussion" area. Are you looking for a windows app?

Yep, that's why I put it here. Haha. I'm on Windows XP right now, I'm thinking about dual booting.

Oops. Well if I remember correctly, you can right-click the desktop and go to properties. The graphic card info is in there somewhere. I think on the main tab, but I can't exactly remember. Sorry.
Also, you should dual-boot. That's how I roll. It's fun.

in windows you don't need any program to tell you your hardware. can't you just go to settings, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, then the particular device you're curious about? For example: I can see what my ethernet controller is right now on my work computer by doing what I just said above. it's a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller.

My wireless card is the main concern, but I want a complete diagnostic list of my hardware... right down to the chipsets.

for stuff like that, i either use AIDA32 or Belarc Advisor (both free)

Belarc Advisor
I found that to be a good program.
If you want something a bit more advanced SiSoft Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=&location=home&langx=en&a=) is a great program with loads of benchmarks and details about individual components. There is a free version.
