Statistics for the Backports master server are now available at http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/stats, with nightly updates.

Here are some numbers to keep in mind. From May 11th to May 19th:

665,000 downloads by 64,000 users
250 GB of backports transferred

74,000 downloads per day, weighing in at a mean 28 GB worth of transfers daily.

64,000 users Are these individual people, or acesses to the backport? If it's diferent people, then it means that there are at least 64,000 ubuntu users (and acessing backports). Wow, this seems really lots, this shows Ubuntu has got a huge userbase!

Well, I have personally had to download the same package at least thrice, albeit on different machines. So it wont give you a user count .. but those are really impressive stats anyway :)

Is there any site where people can log on .. so there is some knowledge about how many users exist? Or maybe look at the device database submitted by users?

There are 21,424 registered users in this forum...and according to http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/stats/usage_200505.html, there have been so far 26,148 Total Unique Sites acessing backports main server in May.
