I just installed it and it looks very nice. So far it is working fine. It should be a lot easier to configure with the new look.

I just installed and it looks and works great! I like the fact the there is a "Basic" for those who don't want to mess with the "Advanced" settings, even though that is what I do.:)
Oh, and I upgraded to v 2.1 and everything is working just fine.

Here is a link to a pretty good how to:

There are many other articles like this one on the web. I just followed these steps. Once you get the hang of it they are real easy to build.

Thanks for all the great work on Dansguardian. It's a blessing to know that my children can use the internet w/o being bombarded with all the filth that is out there. Keep the good work!
One quick question. Will the script work in other linux distros, like PCLinux?
Blessings,
Chuck

Thanks for you kind words. I am glad that my work is useful to you.
The scripts are built specifically for Ubuntu (gnome). There are reports of users installing on Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and even Mepis. However, this takes some tweaking to get it to work and is not supported.

Just downloaded Dansguardian GUI. For a bit it worked, then Firefox started to refuse the proxy connection. Now it won't block any sites at all. Any ideas. I really want to get this working. I have a 15, 9 and 7 year old boy.
Thanks Chuck

Did you already have dansguardian setup on your system? If not you can use the our dansguardian script to setup dansguardian on your system. Get it at www.mirror.christianubuntu.com. Select Edgy or Dapper and then you will find the script to setup dansguardian on that page. You will need to reinstall the beta version of the GUI since the script will install the stable version.
If you already have dansguardian setup did you set it up via the script mentioned above or manually or are you running Ubuntu CE with it preinstalled?

The "Firefox Proxy Settings" have to stay unlocked. Because the moment I lock them it resets to "Direct connection to internet" even though I set them differently and that does NOT work. Yes, I unlock the Proxy and then reset the settings to my proxy info in firefox and then lock the proxy in the gui and it tells me they will not be usable or something until I close and reopen firefox which I do and the settings are back to "Direct connection to internet". So right now the ONLY way for this to work is to leave the Firefox proxy settings UNLOCKED.
Is there anyone else seeing this too? I would like to be able to lock these as this is in a public library with computer savvy kids who love nothing more than to try and break into filters and such.
Edit: Well, I guess I was just imagining things. I closed everything and then I am able to get on line with the filter settings I wanted. ??? I also just installed this on another ubuntu computer and it did just fine. What I did different was to close the firefox window BEFORE I did any changes to the dansguardian gui. :D

I posted something like this in the Christian Ubuntu forums, but I thought I'd ask here as well. I am looking for something like Covenant Eyes or Safe Eyes for Ubuntu. I installed your 1.4.5 beta on Edgy Eft and have to say, I'm really impressed. I used to use webmin to administrate Dansguardian, but this is way better. I was wondering, how hard would it be to assign an email address to send a weekly report to? I was thinking you could use anacron (isn't that what logrotate uses?) for laptops so if they were off, they would still email when the machine came back on. Also nice would be the logging of the administration. Covenant eyes logs when you turn it off and sends that with the lists of sites to your accountability partner. Just a thought. I have done some scripting and am fairly familiar with linux, so I'd love to help if I can. This is one thing that would really help me in convincing the rest of the staff at my church to move over to linux.
Thank you so much for all your hard work. If I can help with testing/programming/anything let me know.
Many blessings, Tony

Did you install the .deb package or did you use the script to install the full filtering?

I installed it through the link which was in the first post. it led me to Ubuntu_CE site and I chose Dapper because I use it. and then script installed it on my system. I did also so that I went to /etc/dansguardian folder and opened couple of list files, and for little supprise they were full of data which won't show up in gui, after I pressed those list buttons?!?!?

Ok, have you tried to use the GUI to disable dansguardian or unlock the firefox proxy settings? The GUI is setup to edit most of the dansguardian files. Which "list buttons" are you referring to?

yes I could disable it through the gui as it is now and unlock firestarter. If I wont do it it locks all settings and I don not have internet. I wondered, was it possibly due firestarter why installation went wrong.

Is firestarter the firewall package? If so that might be the problem.

I am not sure why that happened. I ran the script on my personal system before releasing it.
I would suggest running "sudo apt-get install -f". This should fix the dependency issues. Then maybe you can try the script again to configure everything.
Please keep me posted.

Ok, just to be sure are you using the newest convert_me script for feisty?
Also, since it appears that you are not unwilling to format, I would always recommend doing a "fresh" install as opposed to using the convert_me script.
I am not sure what is causing the problems. It is very hard to figure out since it works for many and not for a few. I take every case seriously and will keep looking until we find the solution.

Thanks for your input Jereme.
I'm on my fourth format/install... the 1st was 'ok' except I think it allowed songbird to bypass the filter. Firefox was filtered fine.
That install ended up crashing due to updates with e17 (trying to get entrance to work) - and perhaps with me using other wrong repos..(which I think led me to experience 'dependency hell' .... (my bad - but e17 was very nice)
This time, (the current/4th install) I did NOT run the update (convert dansguardian new from whatwouldjesusdownload.com) script...
(I've always installed Ubuntu CE 7.04)
this time - just the system update...
And now - firefox isn't being filtered.
But - at least now I can ssh into it and work on it. (which was a problem in install 2 (and 3 I think)...
So - what that all means is - I want firefox to be filtered.
I think I tried to remove dandguardian, clam (which still gives and error at boot about old definitions) and tinyproxy... but I'm not sure now (working on resolution problems)....
Thanks again

To Jereme,
Have you considered hosting the files (the Dansguardian GUI)- so they can be added via apt-get/synaptic/aptitude?
I'm guessing all the remaining add ons are available via aptitude etal.
Maybe that would make it available and easy to access for more.
I'm guessing you are the author of the GUI?

To Jereme,
Have you considered hosting the files (the Dansguardian GUI)- so they can be added via apt-get/synaptic/aptitude?
I'm guessing all the remaining add ons are available via aptitude etal.
Maybe that would make it available and easy to access for more.
I'm guessing you are the author of the GUI?
TM
Yes, I have considered it.
The main problem is that the GUI is tied so heavily to the dansguardian configuration in Ubuntu CE that it would not work or could break users systems who did not have the exact dansguardian configuration.
None of the Ubuntu CE specific "add-ons" are available via repositories. There are several reasons why this is so.
Yes, I am the author of the GUI.

Hello.
I used the script from your website to add just dansguardian to my feisty and it worked really well.
Just wondering whether you think a gutsy version of this script will be available soon, or if you could cook one up for me to try?
thanks.

Glad to hear that it work for you.
The Gutsy version will not be out until Gutsy is officially released. If you feel adventurous you could tweak the Feisty script a little and give it a try. Basically all you would need to do is make a few changes so the script would use the Gutsy repos instead of the Feisty.

I just got a pm from pbcartwright and he said he was going to try to convert his Gutsy to CE with the Feisty script. I could make a simple edit with the Gutsy repos if anyone wants it (so Jereme can keep up with the bug fixes and improvements).
[edit] oops, maybe I spoke too soon. Automatix2 for Gutsy won't be out for a few days.
[edit2] I just realized (thanks to pbcarwright) that the convert_me script won't work properly on Gutsy.

[edit2] Ok, I just edited a convert_me script to work with the new repos. I have not tested this (just got my Feisty how I want it), so basically, use at your own risk. If you want to try this, I have attached it to this post. You will need to untar the Feisty script, remove the file .start, rename this one .start (I could not upload it here like that), and put it in the convert_to_ubuntu_christian_edition_feisty folder, and run the script like normal.
At this point, Wine and Automatix2 do not have Gutsy versions. I saw where Wine for Feisty worked for people on Gutsy, so it should be fine. Automatix2 is picky about the version, so that will not work until they finish updating it (approximately a week, according to a post on the Automatix forums).
Jereme: I don't mean to step on your toes, I just put this out for those interested.
Thanks so much for putting this out for those interested in testing it. This will hopefully save me some time when I start working on Gutsy. If we can get some feedback on what worked and what didn't
Thanks, Jereme

I just edited my other post after noticing (thanks to pbcarwright) that the script will not work on Gutsy. So I will just come up with a basic script or text file with all of the programs, files, repos, and whatever else for now. I will make sure to keep that until you start work on a Gutsy script, so you will have the new stuff (it just saves some searching).

Ok, I have just come up with to quick files with locations of the CE programs and instructions for installing them on Gutsy. Please know that they are not very well written, and not intended for those who are new to Ubuntu, or can't take the risk of messing up their system.

I finally fixed Firefox :KS - the (GUI 1.4.1 beta) script had locked the network settings - and had not configured it to use the HTTP proxy at 127.0.0.1:8080
Once I unlocked it, I was able to configure that part properly.
Working now to lock it back...
Also TinyProxy and Dansguardian, Firehol were not set to startup during boot- I copied the files (from my system backup - (tinyproxy, dansguardian, firehol) to /etc/init.d/ - and chmod to 755 to fix the permission denied error)
Have a few other errors to tidy up
etc/rc2.d50dansguardian: 71
/usr/local/apps/parental-control/./dansguardian_log.pl -- not found
Firefox did show a few sites that may not have been setup to filter (in history - while I was testing) - but most were filtered out. Interestingly - when a history page is brought up (that was 'bad' and 'not denied', but is presently denied (clicked on to show the page), the display in the history pane is also updated to 'access denied'. (hope that is clear)
What I'd like to end up with - is a 'portable' configuration - so I could set this up on other distros as well (sans gui)...

I downloaded & tried this, but.... problems..
Lets get started: the first thing you will need to do is get the convert_me package from http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/download.html. Untar it by right clicking the file and selecting "Extract Here". This will contain many of the files you will be working with.
**********error 404.. couldn't find your path..
You have finished what we can do from the terminal. Open the folder 'convert_to_ubuntu_christian_edition_feisty' and press Ctrl+H to show the hidden files. Go into whatever folders have the programs you want and double-click the .deb files to install them. At this point, you have most of the programs included with Ubuntu CE.
*** I had the tar.gz file, but no folder ( yet). of course when I tried to use dolphine to extract it, it said "ark not found".. so I did the apt-get install ark, then opened the folder!!! CTRL-H in WHAT PROGRAM??????? all it expanded was the convert_me and README no hidden files or folders... was I supposed to run the convert_me ?
running convert_me created a UbuntuCD_Backups folder in my /home folder.. not sure if I can delete tyhat or not..

Are you using Kubuntu? I wrote that guide for Gnome. When you open the file in Nautilus, Ctrl+H will show the hidden files. I guess I should have specified that better...
The UbuntuCE_Backups folder is created by the convert_me script. It contains a backup of the files it replaces. If the script did nothing to your system (check by looking at your FireFox bookmarks), just delete it. Also, I did not mean to run the script, I just said you could check the .start file to see what to change and how to do it. That is optional, and more intended for people experienced with the terminal.
I will work on that new script later, but I don't know what changes need to be made, so don't expect it to work right.

i have a question about dansguardian,
i am running Xubuntu GutsyGibbon 7.10 with all updates
i have installed dansguardian + tinyproxy + firehol packages in synaptic using the normal repositories
and configured it by following http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1222237&postcount=21
i have no dansguardian gui ?
i can disable the proxy in firefox there is no password option to restrict acces to the firefox preferences / proxy settings so dansguardian is useless with skilled kids
the first issue is not a real problem for me but at least it is strange not beeing available
the second issue hurts ! all the effort made to protect my children is for nothing
what is next ?
i want to keep my system as it is now (Xubuntu GutsyGibbon 7.10 installed) no Ubuntu CE or convert scripts etc.
thanks

For Gutsy users, I seem to have some success with using this guide. Its a script was intended for Debian ETCH 6. Its a modified version of the Ubuntu CE Install script from Jereme. http://www.bristolwireless.net/wiki/index.php/ParentalControl

Hi look at my tutorial http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=566698
OpenDNS is faster than an on-site filter such as Dansguardian. Also see http://nbcf.witnesstoday.org/links.html#safe

serxubuser: You will need to install the Dans GUI that Jereme has on the first page of this thread. It is a beta version, but I don't think there is a download for the stable one (unless you grab the .deb from the convert_me tarball).
For your proxy question, I have never messed with that, but I am fairly sure the GUI can lock the settings with your root password (first account you created on Xubuntu).

The dansguardian GUI is the only way my parents will let me use Linux on the main computer, so thank you very much! It works well. Also, regarding the Ubuntu CE DVD, I think it's a good idea.
